I have had similar problems on several occasions since upgrading to 3.1
My phone will seem to shut down (black screen) and not respond. After repeatedly attempting to turn it on/restart/hard reset (all unsuccessfully), it miraculously comes on.
I have had instances where I can't call out, text, receive calls, or use the interet (all with full 3G signal). All other apps that don't require a connection work. This is after hard reseting several times.
Internet pages don't connect about 40% of the time.
Like ChrisFL, I never had any of these problems before updating to 3.1.
Obviously there are issues with the 3.1 update that need to be addressed. If it continues, I guess I'll have to try to restore it to 3.0 if possible.PC, Windows Vista, Windows 7 Evaluation Copy
The battery issue is the most frustrating. If I want to get mail, I have to often do a hard reset. Even when the iphone is plugged into the wall and the indicator says it has full charge, a hard reset will send the battery meter to half life. Anybody else experiencing this?Powerbook G4 12", Mac OS X (10.4)

There are several threads discussing no problems after updating. They generally get threadjacked by people who do have problems, or the posters are attacked as being "fanboys".Lenovo T-60, Intel iMac , Dell/Ubuntu 8, iPhone 3GS 3.1, Windows XP Pro, Leopard 10.5.4
I've noticed that it seems that Europeans are more likely to have a problem with the 3.1 update than people in the US.
i am in Michigan (USA) with this problem. i have tried resetting the iPhone and 2 trips to the genius bar as well. nada.
even though i have many apps with data, i am thinking of downgrading to 3.0.1 just to get back to being able to use 3G even if i have to start over on most of my 90+ apps. i just want 3G back since i am paying for it.dual 2.8 Quad Core, Mac OS X (10.6.1)
I've had this problem since applying 3.1 to my iPhone. The phone basically disconnects from the ATT network meaning I can't send/receive calls or texts and can't access the data network either through email or through apps. Per Applecare's advice, using iTunes I've reset my iPhone to factory settings as new phone, applied the latest carrier patch, and even replaced my SIM card. Nothing helped, so today i went to the Apple store and was given a replacement phone. (refurbished actually - don't get me started on the fact that less than 90 days ago I paid for a new phone, and the replacement is a refurb!)
Anyway, it has 3.0 on it. I wish that it had 3.0.1 since that version was a security patch and it worked fine. However, I will leave my phone at 3.0 until Apple resolves this problem.iPhone 3GS, Other OS, OS 3.1

I experienced 2 and 3 of the problems you mentioned.
Got my phone checked by apple and they gave me a new one stating that the chip had a problem in it. These problems could be due to hardware issues.
