I gave up waiting for 3.1.1 and returned my 3.1 phone for one that (fortunately) has 3.0 on it. I'm not sure I'd take this route if I had a new phone, since what Apple gives is refurbished phones. Since the phone that I turned in was already a refurb - my new phone's GPS was broken - I didn't mind exchanging phones.
Now that I'm back on 3.0, I'm not having any problems with the phone...iPhone 3GS, Other OS, OS 3.1

Apple doesn't even seem to acknowledge that there is a problem with 3.1 for many users.dual 2.8 Quad Core, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

Unless Apple announces (which they very rarely do), there is now way to know what they will do in the future or when they will do it.powerbook g4, iMac 20, Mac OS X (10.5.1), airport express, iphone, ipod, ipod touch
