My phone was having the "unresponsive" problems:
I gave up waiting for 3.1.1 and returned my 3.1 phone for one that (fortunately) has 3.0 on it. I'm not sure I'd take this route if I had a new phone, since what Apple gives is refurbished phones. Since the phone that I turned in was already a refurb - my new phone's GPS was broken - I didn't mind exchanging phones.
Now that I'm back on 3.0, I'm not having any problems with the phone...
i wish i could have returned my iPhone, but i am a month past my anniversary and out of warranty. figures. i'd like to return to 3.0 where my 3G and iPhone worked; however, i fear i'd lose all of my application data by doing so. so, i remain stuck between a rock and a hard place and tread water on the Edge network until a fix comes along . . . if a fix comes along. Apple doesn't even seem to acknowledge that there is a problem with 3.1 for many users.
