That's been my cue, usually, that i'm not receiving when i should be: I plug my iphone in (3G, etc on, as normal) and it never says it has charged. Or I wake up in the morning, and it still says its almost out of battery after being plugged in all night. Once i power cycle it updates just as it should and shows full battery.
Signal strength works the same way: if i go somewhere i know I don't have signal, it tells me I do. Then i power cycle, and badabing, I have no signal suddenly. Not that I could have received a call anyway, at that point heh.
This tells me its a problem with the software/firmware. NOT the sim card. and NOT ATT's problem.
I hear in one of the other threads that someone got a response about them working on a fix, at least. We'll see how long that takes. For the time being I'm just keeping 3G off to see if that doesn't help.macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Just a couple of times I have had to reboot when the phone has gone into a total coma, but at least I now have a phone again. Before that I was having to restart it ten times a day, and it was getting worse. But I'm wondering when Apple will do something so that I can have a 3G phone again. Ominous silence on their part. And to add insult, I still get marketing emails from them saying how wonderful the iPhone is. Why won't Apple ever admit there are problems - very real ones?
Incidentally, I am in Australia (on the Optus network), so I don't think the problem has anything to do with AT&T. it is all Apple, as far as I'm concerned.

So I turned on Bluetooth and SO FAR I haven't had any zombie issues. If anyone else is willing to try this and provide feedback, that might be useful. My iphone hasn't gone into zombie mode nearly as often as others have stated, so I am not confident that this is a fix. But I am curious.iphone, iPhone OS 3.0.1, macbook

Happened with the 3.1 update and and i have just a 3G. I am trying the bluetooth 'fix' at the moment and seems to be doing something. The best work around for me is to turn flight mode on and off and that gets my connection back at least.
Apple really need to get a fix for this problem asap!! So annoying not having a phone!!!PC, Actually Windows7 RC

Also, I went 5 days last week without going back into zombie mode and then this weekend it started again. I'm having to restart my phone 2-3 times per day minimum.
Currently Being ModeratedOct 6, 2009 10:37 AM (in response to backspinnn)I like all others have been seeing this issues since installing 3.1. Its seems to be worse with my wifes phone, she works in an office that has poor service and I work in an office where I have full bars 3G.
When is Apple going to get a fix for this, it's really frustrating.
Also, AT&T told me they would give me a $10 credit. $10 for 2 weeks worth of phone frustrations...that's 2 weeks and counting. They tried to tell me that it's not their problem since it's Apple's software causing the issue. Regardless, AT&T is handling the billing, so it's AT&T's issue too.

So for the meantime I'm switching to edge and turning 3G off. I have my iPhone through a corporate account so I have to await instructions from my higher ups. I'm expecting to have my phone replaced, but if it has 3.1 on the replacement I wonder if that will make a difference. This is becoming a major pain and it's the only phone I have at work. I got an app to monitor battery status because I was beginning to think I wasn't get a true reading with the "factory status indicator." This afternoon the factory status indicator was reading around 75% and the app was saying 100%. After I turned the phone on and off to rectify the zombie calling effect (no dialing, etc.) now the app reads the same as the factory indicator. Hmmmm.G5

Nothing new to add to this thread other than I did open a case with Apple. They recommended wiping the Network settings (did that), then doing a full restore as a new Iphone, then taking the phone to an Apple store for a SIM or phone replacement. They claimed they weren't getting that many complaints about this. I might try going back to the 3.0 release if I do get a replacement phone. This is extremely frustrating when this is your only phone and people can't get a hold of you in an emergency!!!
I would recommend anyone having this issue contact Apple so perhaps this will get more attention.Iphone 3GS, Windows XP

I wasn't aware of that, but those points certainly make sense. Especially if the problems began to occur more generally around the time of the 3.1 upgrade versus the MMS carrier updates, which is in fact when I began experiencing issues. So far I've heard from several folks that system restores back to 3.0 without MMS have been OK. Not sure yet if I'll be going that route, but will keep it in mind as an option.iMac

I originally noticed that bluetooth would randomly drop when connected (but not in use) with my car. My car makes a tone with a bluetooth connection is made or lost, I looked at my phone and it was completely unresponsive -- after several minutes it would reconnect and the phone would be back to normal.
Last night I noticed that I wasn't able to receive calls/texts until rebooting. I've also noticed that texts will sometimes fail to send.
I have bluetooth on constantly.

if you turn off 3G in general settings, the iphone will work with no problems. apparently, something in 3.1 messes up the 3G connection.

Spoke with Apple tech, wiped everything off, went back to "out of box" still not able to call out, calls in go to voicemail, it just goes into a "coma", and won't do anything. I am under warranty, so they're sending me a new phone, but what will happen when another update comes out? My husband has a first generation, no problem, just 3G and 3Gs. Apple need to address this, a lot of people are not happy!!!Dell, Windows XP
