Q: iTunes Freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my ipod to my computer my iTunes freezes up. I just recently restored my ipod so I lost all of my songs and now I can't reload them onto my ipod. My ipod continutally says "Do Not Disconnect" but my iTunes is frozen. Any thoughts? I've reset my ipod and I also restarted the computer. If I wait for a long time my iTunes says it found a corrupt ipod and it needs restored, even though I have done that a few times. It's frustrating so any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem with my iPod also.
    I have Windows Vista, though.
If you still need help this is what I did:
    1. I plugged my iPod into my computer WITHOUT opening iTunes.

    2. I clicked "Start" and went the "Computer" on the right hand side.

    3. I right clicked my iPod folder and selected properties at the very bottom.
*(If this doesn't work. Select the iPod folder and click properties near the top where File, Tools, ect. toolbar is.*)

    4. Go to the "Tools" tab and click "Check Now..." under the Error-Checking section.

    5. Check both quetions and wait.
**~~!!DON'T CLICK OUT OF THE WINDOW. IT MAY TAKE A WHILE so be PATIENT!!~~**

    6. If you have your computer automatically set to open iTUnes when your iPod is connected then iTunes should pop up, otherwise open iTunes and your iPod should show up.

    Hope this helped.

Just had and fixed this problem. I plugged my iPod into a computer without iTunes on it (so it wouldn't open and freeze), then I just formatted it. Plugged it into my main computer, iTunes told me to restore it, and I did so. Just synced everything back onto it, and it's working fine.

Same for me itunes 9 freezes when iphone is connected. I tried a lot of things but what finally worked was just leaving it connected. after about 20 minutes the beach ball went away and itunes worked again.

My iPod Touch froze my iTunes on my PC as described previously. I got my new iMac and connected it with iTunes 9.02 running and it froze this time as well. But after 5 minutes of seemingly being frozen iTunes displayed a page prompting me to upgrade to version 3 of iPod OS. I was able to install that at this point and once it was completed my iPod was not displaying its contents via the expanded drop down menu on the iTunes side bar where the connected iPod is displayed. I then reconnected the iPod and everything seems to be working fine.

I dont like the idea of having to pay $5 to fix what must be a glitch but it worked.

Finally I just switched my USB port on my imac and it seems alright.

I received a 160 GB iPod for Christmas 2009 and was tearing my hair out in anxiety/rage because iTunes kept freezing when I plugged in my iPod. However, after roughly four hours of searching online for a cure, I found one. Let me know how helpful this is. Follow the directions at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3779011
    Best of luck.

Patience worked. I waslked away for five minutes and came back to it just as it said "Verufying iPhone." then it froze again, so I waited some more and sure enough, it worked.

So anyone else with this problem, please, be patient and at least wait 30 minutes before trying something else.

I as well just got my new iTouch (32GB model). I installed the newest version of iTunes and was getting all kinds of weird stuff happening. For instance, I was trying to install the bundled version of iTunes+Quicktime, but Quicktime and some of the Apple services wouldnt load. I finally got to the point where I could open iTunes, but as soon as I connected my iTouch it froze and crashed the program.

    Here was my fix:

I finally thought it could be my firewall (was using Online Armor from Tall Emu). So I used Revo uninstaller (nice program to remove traces that are often left behind by a normal uninstaller, free version available as well) to remove everything Apple associated from my PC. Then, I removed my firewall. After a reboot, I tried installing the packaged iTunes+Quicktime installer. This time I noticed it actually went through the Quicktime installer and installed a few other services that it didnt do before. Then I installed a different firewall package (I chose Zone Alarm this time). After all was installed, I rebooted again. Once back up into windows I plugged in my iTouch. iTunes open with no issues and went through the initial Registration for my iTouch.

So, I was getting a bunch of the same types of errors as others in these forums, freezes/crashes/errors that certain services werent loading, all due to my firewall.

    Hope this helps...

    -Steve

    SOMETHING WORKED!!!

I had the same problem on my Windows Vista... I pulled up the task manager and closed out "iTunes helper" and iTunes immediately recognized my iPod.

Please let me know if this works for anyone!

I had the same problem. I found the solution on another site and wish to share the info. So: Connect your ipod to your computer. Itunes will run and connect your ipod but but it wont sync to itunes. This is typically when itunes freezes, so you have to close itunes (altctrldel) or by clicking the x button manicaly to close it. Go to my computer and you should see a seperate drive for your ipod. Right click it and click on 'format' (keep in mind this will delete everything on your ipod so make sure all your music/photos/movies are still on your computer). Then click format and it'l ask you, are you sure? Say yes. This takes awhile,(30 minutes to an hour). Then when you open itunes again, your ipod will finally sync, but restore it so that you basically just reset your entire ipod, so its as if you took it out of its box yesterday and brand new. Put music on it and sync. THIS WORKED FOR ME. Many thanks to Melymel.
