Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Oh boy....looks like we might be in trouble! I have a whole range of Apple's and this is my daughters iMac....intel-based. Think it is 17".... Serial Number: QP64700JVUY I think it is coming up too three years old, but not quite.
My daughter told me about the lines on her screen a couple of months ago and have only just had a chance to look at it....she has blue green white and black lines down the right hand side of the monitor taking up about 3" of space, plus one lone vertical green line about 3/4 of the way into the screen.
We live in the Cayman Islands and would have to pack it up and take it to the US.......does this mean the iMac is toast?
Is there nothing I can do?
    Thanks

Me, too. purchased March 06. 17 " display. W860**U2N So after looking over these posts,

What is the best method to resolve this problem. Phone call; if so to whom?, visit to the store (I am nearby one.) I ask because they will open a complaint when I do and I want to start at the best place. TIA

Apple Canada agreed to replace my display after a polite telephone call. Complain or otherwise be confrontational at your own risk. Apple does not seem to have an official replacement program - which is why there is a 35 million dollar class action law suit in the US (which will probably drag on for a couple of years). And if you're left out in the cold, the display part costs $600 more or less, labour will run an additional $200 or $300. Alternatives? Replace the computer (a new Mini costs less than repairing your 1st gen Intel iMac); attach an external monitor.

Even at Canadian dollars, how could the labor cost $200 to 300? It barely takes 30 minutes to replace a display! When my display arrived I took the iMac to the service center and was walking out in 45 minutes, and he said that he took a little extra time to clean it out because this was the first time it had been worked on in its three+ year life.

W8 SN's especially should get work done free even if out of warranty - a known issue from a particular manufacturing facility in China (per a similar thread to this one in these forums). Call Apple.

David, my mistake, many seem to be posting repair costs in the range of $650-$800USD, I'm assuming taxes are in addition (which in Canada is 13%). I'll ask the service centre guy for the actual repair cost he would have charged me had I paid for it, when I take mine in, and I'll post this if it helps. 1 USD = 1.05 Cdn.

    An update for you all.
Today the vertical lines changed to a white band with black vertical lines.......anyway, I called Apple and was put straight through to a product specialist.....after unplugging and rebooting, the vertical lines turned into a solid black 3" line!....anyway, he was very nice---gave me a case number and even though I am in Cayman, the Authorised Apple Dealer here will take it in and fix it.

So, those that have had theres fixed......do they fix the same machine or give you a new one? I need to know so I can save all the stuff she has on it.

    Please let me know ASAP.
Thanks all and good luck to all you other users who may have an issue.

You need to always make a back up regardless of whether they are just fixing the mac. Accidents happen, and they do not usually guarantee your data on the hard drive.

They will repair the Mac that you have by installing a new display.

Yeah, I haven't felt so bummed out in a while.

My Late 2006 17 Inch iMac just got a Blue Vertical line that runs almost dead center Today. No way to ignore it. *Well, I Can't* . Whats even worse is that the line appeared just 22 days after my Applecare coverage expired. My Coverage expired September 20th, 2009. *22 Days After!!!*
If I spend $1299 for a Computer, I'd expect it to be rock Solid for at least 5 years, not in 3 years or right after warranty runs out. I'm a Student and I just can't afford to pay for repairs and I don't have buy a 2nd display to put atop my Already crowded desk. Yea, I spent money in the past by increasing Ram and recently my Upgrade to Snow Leopard on It.

I am Definitely going to try to call applecare and try to get in touch with the supervisor.

As you probably have read in earlier posts, I had the vertical line problem on my W86-U2N 17" iMac. It started with one line and gradually got additional lines. After several calls Apple finally gave me a # to get the LCD screen replaced free of charge. I was extremely happy. I finally received my computer back with the NEW LCD screen but unfortunately, it lasted 3 weeks and it got the first vertical line. Needless to say I was completely bummed. I did take the computer back and fortunately the LCD screen has 30 days of warranty so they replaced it again. I finally got it back today but I am not as positive as I was the first time. I really hope this one holds up. I will update the status if it happens again with this 3rd LCD. Fingers crossed.

I called Apple this morning and was told my fix would not be covered. I mentioned all about this forum, etc. but while very nice, was told I was out of warranty. So I went up to the Apple store and said, 'I'm here for authorization for a free fix for my 17" imac, since you know it is a common problem and a defect." After checking with the manager. I was told it would be fixed for no charge and they would call when my parts arrived at the store, Yay!

Follow-up as promised: Had I paid for the replacement:
With a new part from Apple: $700 Cdn + applicable taxes (which is what was done with mine)
With a used screen from a broken iMac: $350 Cdn + applicable taxes

Follow up...I called another slovenian Apple Authorised service and they gave me the Apple Care number, probably the one for Europe in general cause you have to talk english with them.

In case it can help someone in the future, the number is: 080 080 321 (free call)

So I called, the guy put me on hold, checked an article about my problem, asked me a few questions, said they'll make an exception and gave me the case number to replace my screen for free.

    Way to go Apple!!!

I hope everyone gets to solve their problem and have their screen replaced for free. Just insist and don't give up. Good luck!

Hi there! I am having the same problem of vertical lines (sigh... very frustrated!). Anyway, glad to read your post - I am hoping to be able to do the same thing here in CA. I am wondering though- you said that they will call you when the "parts" arrive. What parts did they tell you you need if the problem is the screen? Thanks in advance for the info.

i too had the vertical lines on my imac.
first it was one, then three, then nine.
i called apple, they informed me that my warranty expired 811 days ago.
they suggested i make an appointment at the apple store, probably my lcd display and or the logic board.
just for the heck of it i asked for an "approximate" cost.
they put me on hold for over five minutes.
a nice sounding guy got back on the line and said "we're going to fix this for you at no cost"
    i was floored.
needless to say i took the first appointment they had that afternoon.
i just got home with my machine, both the lcd & the mlb were replaced at zero cost to me!
it should have been over 1200 bucks.
    i'm very happy.
this is another example why i will only buy a mac!
