I have the same problem, mind you I have about 20000 tracks on my external hard drive. iTunes sees some and others, totally random, it can't find. I also read somewhere else, but way older thread, that this can happen when the external hard drive is disconnected and you open iTunes and it can't find the files, so it starts looking somewhere else. I have the problem that when I start the computer, sometimes it doesn't see the external hard drive. I have to restart and it's fine. This also only started happening after upgrading to 10.6.
I have been trying to work out this problem all day, read all the threads, and there are A LOT of people with the same problem, and I really can't believe that there isn't anybody with an answer...c'mon Apple...fix it ; )Intel Xeon

i have the same problem, as soon as i upgraded to itunes 9 it couldn't find a bunch of my files. what's weird though, is that i have two external hard drives, one primary and one backup. when i have both plugged in, itunes can find almost all of my songs, but with only one plugged in there are thousands missing. is there any way to consolidate my library?Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.10)
