iPhone stuck in silent mode

I could have the vibrate off, ring on, and hear nothing. This is happening on my daughter's iPhone as well. The only indication that a call is coming in is through the vibrate/silence option (and the display). Ringtones & music can be heard when selected.
I've tried the reset solution, and it didn't work.
iMac Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.4.10), 2 GB M; 500 GB HD; 2.33 GHz chip

    With the phone on the home screen have you tried turning the volume up so that display says "ringer volume" when you push the volume piece?

    The phone uses the volume button for different settings depending on what screen/app you are in.

    If you have 2 phones doing this, my first response is "operator error", BUT everything you describe indicates you have everything set ok - as long as the silent switch is not on.

    You probably should walk into an Apple store with both phones and talk to someone at the genius bar.
