Hello- For a while now I've had a mild interest in developing some very simple apps that would be useful at my job. I'm not a programmer by trade, but I'm inquisitive enough to occasionally teach myself the basics of this kind of thing.

While I most likely will not pursue app development at full force, I would like to tinker with it to gauge just what is or isn't within my limits. But before I get started I have two main questions:

1) Can a person develop apps with no cost to themselves? When I google phrases like "How to make iphone app" I often am referred to: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/ , the apple developer program, costing $99. That price tag is kind of steep for me to simply test the waters. Is this an optional program, or required?

2) My understanding is that to test out my own apps, I have to register my iphone as a developer iphone (I forget the term for this). Does doing this have a downside, or can it cause any irreversible changes to my phone that I may not want?

Thanks for your time
