Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

No you should not. Tell the front line agent that you are calling about the issue with vertical lines on the display.

Another happy customer! I lived with a pink vertical line for about a year, having read here that it was unlikely to be fixed. However on developing a further two yellow lines in the past few weeks, and reading here that some machines had been mended, I took it to the Cambridge Apple store, where after a call to Apple Care, a free repair was authorised. Three days later I got a phone call to say it was ready. My machine is almost three years old, and I note that the repair would have cost the best part of £400 so I am really happy with the service. I hope that my machine has many years of life left in it.

I'm the unhappy customer in Europe with vertical lines and Apple pretending that there's no such issue. They said that I have to pay for fix. I call apple support and they said that there's no repair extension program. I spoke to first line agent and don't have time to wait for connect to the supervisor/manager. I'll call again today and see what will happen.
It's my first mac and if they don't fix it for free the last one.
If I have to I'll buy an external monitor but won't buy magic mouse, TC and other Apple products becouse I see that if they have problems Apple won't fix it.
I also have a Compaq laptop witch has manufacturing error with overheating mainboard. I call them and they fix it at once without problems. Are they better than Apple? It looks like it.

Have you called this number? 080 080 321 (free call for Europe, you have to talk in english with them)

If not, do it, that's where i got my case number to have my iMac screen repared for free. It was simple, I didn't have to insist or anything. Good luck.

Called the free Apple helpline here in Malta, was told Apple have a program to fix these display problems (guess its a widespread and known issue) and so they have agreed to fix my iMac for free Phew! Their after sales service does go a long way to restore my faith in them

Was worried about the quality of their products, but a few days back my 3.5 yr old Macbook Pro was sent spinning and flying across the room while it was on coz some idiot tripped on a wire. It landed heavily on a rock hard surface, but amazingly it barely got a scratch on it, and it still works fine, touch wood. Passed all the hardware tests and all. Don’t think many laptops would have survived that! I’m goin to be a mac user for life...:)

I spoke too soon. It took all of three days for a new, yellow vertical line to appear...

JennyWren, you're saying lines are now appearing on your new display??

I have 3 lines on the right... one intermittent pink one over on the left. Calling Apple after I make sure everything is backed up. Just ridiculous. :P

I call Apple Poland support and it may not be good to me. They connect me to manager at once to finish previous talk (bonus for them) I've got a case number but the manager said that repair must bu authorised by apple engineers in USA, so it isn't case for free repairing yet. I think that i should call Apple USA get number for repair from them and then call Apple Poland to ask for repairing service with case number... Manager asked for pictures of my iMac screen and I send them. I'll wait and see what happend with my fingers crossing

The first line appeared appeared on my iMac last week. The second one showed up two days ago. I have no warranty or AppleCare. I spoke with Apple last night. The first person told me to bring it in for repair. I kindly asked for them to extend my warranty. After a few minutes a supervisor came on the line and said they would repair my computer for free.

    thanks apple

just a side not. the same think happened on my first gen iBook. I wasn't that concerned because it happened after six years on constant use

I thought this was an issue only I was having! I have an early 2006 Intel Core Duo. I have a huge 1.4" vertical white translucent band on my monitor near the center and a number of propagating thin colored lines throughout my screen. I was about to get a new 27 inch iMac but it seems like people are having problems with that one, too!

    Hi All...
I have an iMac 24" of the white model from middle 2007, and it looks like there are a spread of dark shadows centering around the iSight cam.
It goes half way down the screen - it looks kinda cool but when working a lot in photoshop it is an issue...
The retailer where I bought it, sold me an extra "insurance" so I'm covered for about half a year yet.
My problem is that I convinced my mother to get an iMac as well for about a year ago and now her machine is beginning to do the same.

Did any of you ever find a solution or are all your "lines" different?

Kind regards, a still happy mac fan...
