So, as mentioned in my last post, the machines that we have with nvidia's in all experienced the

    NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception!

    and

    NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel timeout!

All cards were replaced by our supplier as confirmed faulty cards. Due to us having deadlines, I only put the replacement cards into the machines about 3 weeks ago and have been running on the ati cards instead. Already I'm having the same fun and games and will be returning one of the replacement cards for....errr... oh yeah, replacement!!!!

How long can this go on for before Nvidia own up and we start seeing replacement cards that we can rely upon? It doesn't matter how many driver/OS updates there will be; it's a hardware fault, which is temperature related. The harder you run the machine, the more likely it is to go wrong. As a leading company in computer animation, we have a high demand on graphics cards.

We are still having to replace the Quadras as well in our other computers.

    Come on Nvidia!!!

Okay I found a program that can reproduce this every time on my MBP 17. I downloaded and ran the Postbox mail client (beta - http://postbox-inc.com). When it opens, just cancel the initial dialog and try resizing the main window.

Count me in. I never had any problems yet, but it started when I used the "feature download" Multiwinia (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/role_strategy/multiwinia.html).
    It looks like this: http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/3811/img3937.jpg

I got a message from Ambrosiasoft stating it is a driver or hardware failure APPLE IS AWARE OF. I already contacted my local apple service provider since applecare support line told me to "repair permissions" sigh :/

    Hello,
I'm sorry you are stuck in the middle. Apple is fully aware of the issue. Simply do a search for "NVDAOpenGL: Channel exception" and you will find plenty. My iMac was actually replaced by AppleCare last year for this same problem...generally brought about when playing World of Warcraft.

It seems to be persistent across all Nvida cards. I have an old Quicksilver G4 and both the original card that shipped with the machine and newer card sucumb to this. The real problem is that they didn't used to. I went almost a year before this started up, but now it doesn't matter which card or which OS version number, I can't go more than 30 min without a freeze necessitating a hard reset. Makes me nervous about my other boxes with Nvidia cards.

This is really annoying, i really regret having spent over $2000 dollars on this laptop. The first problem i had was the logic board getting fried by the the "faulty" packaging of the nvidia chip. I got that replaced for free; lot's of people payed hundreds to get theirs repaired or haven't taken the plunge. Now about a month ago i've been getting the display freezing at start-up, writing e-mails, playing games, etc. This is really bloody frustrating. Ive read so many forum posts that i don't know *** the problem is anymore. If it's the drivers apple provides for it's GPUs or if it's the GPUs failing again. What ever it damned is, we want a ******* answer.

    Hi guys,

I had the same NVChannel log entries after my display freezed.

I was using a Mac G5 dual 2.3 GHz with a GeForce 6800 Ultra graphic card and with Mac OS 10.5.8 installed.

This hit me 2 weeks ago ... after using the same version of Mac OS 10.5.8 for some time. So I didn't change anything, what could have caused the problem.
The problem was pretty tough, because the display freeze already came up at starting the Mac. So i couldn't try much ... instead of reinstalling Leopard.

What I've done since that day:
    - Cleared my hard drive with writing Zeros (once) to delete all content on it
    - Installed a fresh version of 10.5.0 from Leopard DVD
--> No display freezes, everything was fine.
    - Installed all available updates with the built in software update tool
--> Display freezes came back instantly. Couldn't even start the Mac without the display freeze
    - Ok, I thought, lets get back to 10.5.0 ... so i cleared my hard drive without writing Zeros.
    - Installed a fresh version of 10.5.0 from Leopard DVD
--> Display freezes came back instantly. Even at booting the system from Leopard DVD there were display freezes
    - So next step was to clear the hard drive with writing Zeros on it and installing Leopard 10.5.0 again
--> Again, no problems. Everything seems fine.
    - Installing all available updates via Software Update instead of the combined 10.5.8 update.
--> No display freezes and a smooth running system for about 24 hours now.

I don't know why this worked for me, but it did. Next step will be trying to install the OS updates step by step to have a look, which causes the problem. Maybe it's possible to avoid the graphic driver updates ... as the current graphic drivers (of 10.5.0) seem to run fine.

Has anyone a idea where to get these updates?

    Best regards,
    Apo
