Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Mdanielsen, you have a different problem than most people here. Most people have a problem with many vertical lines of different colors on the screen and Apple covers the costs for screen replacement in this case. I don't know how it goes when it comes to shadows around Sight cam. I hope you work it out as well. Good luck!

    Hi all,

My partner's 17" iMac has just developed this problem it's a W8 serial no too. At the moment there is 1 bright blue line right of centre going down the screen.

She doesn't have Applecare, we're in the UK and looking for advice on what to do or where we stand. From some of the posts here it sounds as if Apple are honouring a free repair while others are having to paying a fee.
Could anyone shed some light on this please.

    Thanks

I'd call this number 080 080 321 (it's free) and tell them you know it's a serial defect and that Apple is fixing it for free, it worked for me.

I had this problem during the first year of owning my late 06 17 inch Imac, as it was under warranty they fixed it for free and I purchased the extended applecare warranty in case it happened again.

    Well...

2 days ago it happened again, only this time it was 2 months out of warranty. After reading this forum I phoned applecare uk, told them the problem, and after being on hold for about 10min was told that my warranty had run out but they'd cover the repair and authorize my serial. Just have to take it to my local apple store

I guess it pays to at least ask the question... Also EU law gives a 4 year manufactures warranty and the UK gives 6. So IF you get told that they won't cover it, keep pushing

Same issue here, my 2006 Intel Core Duo started with 1 cyan line about 3 months ago and this week added a two light blue lines. I didn't have applecare and its been out of warranty for a couple of years, really thought I was out of luck. This thread gives me hope that Apple may take care of this, even though its out of warranty.

What number did people call in the US?

Well, hmmm...I just went to the local Apple Store last night because the older iMac (below) developed a line or two. I purchased it new in September 2006 along with the extended AppleCare package, which of course expired just a month or two back. But the fellow told me Apple has instituted a repair extension so I'm getting a new display at no charge. I don't know whether this is because I had gotten extended AppleCare or because Apple has decided to do the right thing (the way they did with the bad motherboards on some G3 iBooks a few years back) or because I was customer #1,000,000 or because the fellow thought I looked needy or cute or what. But there we are. I'll take it!

I called the 1-800-275-2273 number and was not charged the $50. I did have to talk to Level 2 Support (Product Specialist) to get anything done, however.

I called the number above, didn't pay the $50 and mentioned the vertical lines. The person said they had heard of the issue ad issued a special exception and made the repairs. My iMac was 2 years out of warranty and they still made the exception! Nice job Apple!

Now I hope they stay away, hopefully it is not a graphics card issue.

i feel disappointed with apple and his mediocre way to fix this issue my imac recently develop a gigantic white strip that takes the half of the display and make my imac garbage imposible to use with the half of the display, but the only not bad part of it is that i was going to buy a mac book pro but now only if they gave my one for free, because i dont want to pay extra for a latop just for having to put it in the garbage can 2 or 3 years later, i miss the old imacs that were useful for years not became garbage after 2 years.

Attempting to get Apple to just send the screens, no repair centres here and spent £220 on insured postage for the last 5.

I just called Apple for vertical lines on my iMac 17 of Feb 2006 (no warranty) and was given a case number and an appointment at an Apple Store today for it to be repaired.

I still can't believe this....I had given up on Apple for this issue and ordered the new iMac i7 (which unfortunately, and seems to be now typical of Apple!!) has the issue of yellow tinge over the bottom half of the screen.

I will be taking both iMacs to the store today for repair / replacement.
