Q: Why does my IP printer not work ?

Ok, I read most of the topics about 10.6 and AppleTalk printers. And I worked my way all along, til I found out how to create a IP printer. But when I send a printjob to this IP printer, I get the following error message: "Network host 192.168.2.110 is busy, down, or unreachable,..."

I simply do not know what else I have to do !!
For better understanding her is hoe my printer (LW 12/640) is connected to the rest of my network.

the printer is connected via Ethernet to a 5 port hub, which is connected to a router and from there to my computer.
With a testapp from the vendor of this router, I did send "ping" to the IP address of the IP printer. All packets did return and it seems, that the router can "talk" to the printer.
So what could the error message mean ?????????

I´m sure some of you experts can help me along. Thank you in advance .

BTW. Yes, there is no need to have IP printers when using 10.4., but I will buy a new Apple Pro and wanted to make shure that I can go on with my good ol`workhorse 12/640.

What can talk to what is determined by the subnet mask. The subnet mask has one-bits for each bit that should be the same to allow two devices to talk directly, (i.e., without the intervention of a Router).

If you printer is at 192.168.2.110,
and your Mac is at 192.168.2.100 your subnet mask
would need to be 255.255.252.0 (the ten low-order bits turned to zeroes to create the subnet that looks to me to include all from 192.168.0.0 through 192.168.3.255

I do understand your explanation and I got the printer working real fine.
But one thing is not clear to me. You say the subnet mask would need to be
255.255.252.0, mine seems to be 255.255.255.0
Only a small difference, but does it mean something important ??

If everything has addresses in the 192.168.2.xxx range, then 255.255.255.0 is correct.

What did you change (if anything) to get it working?

As it happens often, things start to work fine after they didn`t for no particular reason.
I deleted the not working IP printer and started to create one up from the beginning.
Using the printer utility in Mac OS 9.2.2, I did set the IP and the subnet mask.
Then chose the 12/640 from the pull down list.
    The protocol is LPD.
Well, after all I have no explanation why it didn`t work the first time.
    Thanks for your help.
