Thank you so much for the link to Candleair!!!!!!! I just found this stupid "feature" tonight after installing Understudy and Hulu Desktop. I (like many people here) use a Mac for a media center so I rely heavily on being able to use the remote with applications like Hulu Desktop because I don't have a keyboard/mouse hooked up to the system (its hooked up to an LCD tv). This works spectacularly though so now I can pause a show without firing up iTunes!!!!

Im sorry but I don't see how installing Candleair solves my problems? I can't change anything except turning off the IR reciever, but that doesn't solve anything?

    What am I missing?

Once you have installed Candleair, try controlling another media application with the remote control. You should find that the remote control operates the active application, and not iTunes. You don't need to configure anything.

Thanks for that. Also make sure you re-launch your application (EyeTV in my case) to get the remote working properly.

    Imagine that...

New OS upgrade and the Apple Remote stops working with anything except Front Row applications again. They did it when they upgraded to 10.6, then again with 10.6.1, and now again with 10.6.2,

This is starting to stink of the whole Microsoft/Netscape thing. Are 3rd party media players never going to work correctly on the Mac as long as Apple supplies a competing service?

Yes not only has this update not fixed the problem it has disabled the Candelair fix. This is the kind of behavior that might force me to switch back to a Windows box, I will not have a company dictate what I can and can't do with a piece hardware I paid good money for.

just update and re-install candelair, apple remote will be back to normal functionality with 3rd party apps ...

and forget the myth of apple being the "good" software developer company: they just run for the money and use any measure to protect their business model.

    bye

I've reinstalled, still not working on anything other than iTunes, Frontrow and strangely VLC. I'm assuming VLC may have taken its own steps to get around this problem.

Apple has been doing this for years with software that competes with their Pro Apps like Logic or Final Cut. Every little system upgrade makes Pro Tools or Avid useless. It seems that they are being more and more open with this practice and that worries me a lot. Do they think we don't notice?

Unfortunately, I will never be able to give up my mac. On the other hand, I am no longer considering purchasing a Mac Mini to use as a media player connected to my TV. It doesn't seem like its worth the constant fight with Apple to be able to use the hardware that I paid for.

This problem is also present with Spotify. Annoying as ****.

When I press the Play/Pause button I DON'T WANT iTunes to start! Really, ***?!

This is even more frustrating because the thing works logically in Leopard and then Apple screwed it up.

I tried to look for a "report bug" type of option from iTunes application and Support side of apple website but could not find any before my anger grew to unacceptable level.

I'm calling Apple support tomorrow and I already feel bad for that poor person who is going to answer my call.. :C

If anyone can post a link to some place where people can submit this feature as unwanted feature or bug please do so. Would probably help more than whining here for Apple to fix this.

I just send them a feedback about stop/play button and complained it as a bug. Nothing more that I can do, right?
