What do you do when you've done everything on the Troubleshooting checklist and you've followed all the steps in these forums... but still it won't work? We can see the "home sharing" network fine on all three computers in the house... we can even see the lists of videos and songs... and we can play the music interchangeably on all computers.

But on ONE of the computers, video via the home sharing network doesn't work. You click play on a streamed video file and nothing happens. What's strange is that this same computer can play music files via home sharing, no problem. And all the other computers on the network can share video, even video hosted on the Mac Mini that won't run anything.

    Any suggestions?

I have similar problems. This thread has been a lot of help in things to try and verify what I had already done. currently using a 15" PB 64 1.33, 17" PB 64 1.5, a 17" iMac G5 1.9 (as the primary server with some Iomega external 1TB drives, a Dell Latitude D610 and an HP notebook.

I have been playing videos over the network (gigabit ethernet) for several years but only using Quicktime, not iTunes. Music sharing (9K songs) is working fine including music videos and TV shows. I have Home Sharing working to a point. My purchased videos seem to be ok as well.

Recorded or ripped videos are another story. On t he Macs, NO Problems. The PeeCees however will not play (streamed) the videos but they do show up in the shared library and I am now able to drag them to the PeeCee's local music folder in iTunes. I prefer the "just click on it and hit the space bar" approach so as not to have to clear the file from the drive manually.
This IS better than what I had to do with Quicktime but it still isn't right. Any thoughts.
Come on Apple, clean this up for all of us (or at least for "the rest of us". Plagiarism intended!

Home sharing is now working, after installing iTunes 9.0.1.

Adding my experience to this very long list, confirming the general FUBAR.

Followed all of the suggestions, checked sharing in Prefs, used the same iTunes ID on both computers and they will NOT play each others music. Every time they try I get the useless message to check port 3689... which I figured out how to do with the Network Utility, and it's open.

I have entered my account name and password and hit the create Home Share button on both my computers, but neither of the computers are showing up under the share icon.

I can get the sharing libraries to work just fine but never see the elusive "Automatically import new purchases" option. This is what I really want to get working so I am not always manually copying content from one to the other. Has anyone figured out if this option even exists?

I have 2 macs, an airport extreme, an airport express.

The error that always comes up is the -3689.

I have followed all the suggestions and rules, including deleting all the preference lists.

It still does not work. How Windows of this.

I think that happens automatically. Since its happened to me three times. Once another computer library is on the same networking and its in range of your computer library they will automatically connect to each other. If you are unsure that home sharing is turned on, just go to preferences, then sharing then check the status which is on the bottom of the screen it will tell you first if your computer is on home sharing then second if a library is connected. If sharing is not on and the house icon to start home sharing is not there then i believe that you are screwed so hopefully that's not the case. Hope This Helps!

    Riley,

I think I found the solution to iTunes on Windows not streaming ripped videos from iTunes on OS X.

It has something to do with the tags that are contained in the MP4 files. I downloaded and used a program called Lostify to edit / fix the MP4 tags for my ripped video files and now they will stream to iTunes on Windows.

One note... Lostify by default will create a new video file with same filename with "-tagged" added to the end. This can be changed via options at the bottom of the Lostify application. If you choose to let it create the new file name, you will have to import it back into iTunes. One way to make sure that you are testing the right file is to set the Rating on the Movie and make sure that it shows the rating within iTunes.

    Hope this helps!

Home sharing worked for a week with new iMac and Mac book and then stopped. iTunes 9.02. None of the fixes work. Bugger.

    This worked for me.

I have a mac mini, a macbook, and a pc. The mac mini and the pc's home sharing worked perfectly but the macbook's didn't. After trying everything on this forum, I realized that the mac mini and pc were on ethernet, while the macbook was on wifi. I turned on the mac mini's airport -- lo and behold home sharing on the macbook detected the mac mini's home sharing. I connected the macbook on ethernet and successfully detected the pc's home sharing.

    Good luck!

This may or may not help. I use a 15in MBP, and a 24in iMac, and had an occasional issue with the Home sharing not working...

My experience seems to point to have the correct "location" chosen on my MBP in order for this to work. I have two, one for work, and my home location. I think the issue is that you may need to be set in the location from which you created the Home Sharing.

I have had days where it wasn't working, and I was in my work location, switching to my Home location on the MBP resolved it. This works for me - ymmv.

Thanks! This one worked for me. All I had to do was move the plist file, open iTunes, and turn on Home Sharing.

I am trying to give my second computer permission to play my iTunes music. I gave the new computer permission. It tells me that but when I open iTunes my music is not showing. If I plug the ipod in to the computer, the list shows, but very light in color and it will not play the music. Anyone have this problem?

It's amazing to me that Apple hasn't proven to be more helpful with this. The Home Sharing is a great concept, but seems almost impossible to actually use. I'd expect them to be more diligent in helping their customers with this...
