I'm intrigued to see how many others have purchased the new 27" iMac's and have managed to get one without any dead pixels.

I am currently on my 2nd 27" iMac and both of them have a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen, first one was black, this second one is red.

27" iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

The higher your screen resolution, the more likely it is you'll get a bad pixel. But the higher the pixel density, the less noticeable it is because the individual pixels are so small. Most people will not bother to take a magnifying glass and check every square inch of their new display for bad pixels, so there could be many iMac 27" displays out there that have bad pixels which their owner doesn't know or care about.

I think you've been exceptionally unlucky to get two displays in a row with bad pixels in such a prominent spot.

Yeah dead in the middle is a bit of nuisance for me.

i picked up two 30" ACDs a few years back in case one was better than the other with the intent to send one back...one had 5 red dots around the center...so annoying, the second had one only on RED backgrounds and i figured thats fine no big deal...cant see it on any other color and its not noticable its off center but still in the middle of the screen. i hardly see it but i do occasionally spot it.

im looking at getting the new LED iMac to replace it with and hopefully I should get lucky the first time around =)

goodluck hope you get a good iMac

Im always behind the times, but anyhow just noticed a dead pixel right in the centre of the screen on my new 27" iMac. So I phoned Apple tech support to ask a few questions about getting it replaced, no luck it seems Im short a few dead pixels to qualify. When I asked the girl on the other end how many dead pixels are needed on the 27" iMac she told me Apple wants 11 ELEVEN dead pixels before the warranty it.

I just unpacked my new 2.8 i7 iMac, and the first thing I noticed was the dead pixel it's not quite in the middle, but Anytime I'm waching something in full screen there it is mocking me... the little blue dot amongst all the black ones. Thankfully, it only shows up when it's supposed to be black. What a shame

Return it and demand a replacement. If you charged it to American Express or a decent charge card then charge it back.

It's a fault just like any other type of fault. Your brand new iMac's pixels are all meant to be working. If you receive one where they clearly are not you are right to have it replaced. This is not a PC, it is a top of the range Apple product for which we expect and demand the highest quality. After all, we're paying top dollar (or £) for this level of build and design. Accept nothing less.

Hi there, I received my new Imac 27" i7 yesterday. I was very happy at first as I could not find any dead pixels however when I used my Isight camera I was very upset. I found a total of 19 dead + stuck pixels in the isight camera making it really unusable, I was shocked with this. How is it possible for there to be so many? Has anyone else checked their isight cameras? If you put a black cloth over it or if you are wearing a black top you will be able to see them much better. This is my first post so I'm sorry if I am taking over someone's thread.

Yes, my iSight camera also has 8 dead pixels but I didn't notice it until I covered the camera with my finger.

Anyway, my screen has no dead or stuck pixels AFAIK after 1 week of intensive usage. I do have the flickering problem which is really annoying!

Mine is blue/green--right in the middle of the screen! But, hey!--it's not a cracked glass or flashing neon screen like some of the other complaints!

Actually, Apple considers one dead pixel 'within spec'.

However, if you've only just bought it, you can choose to return it for any reason within 14 days.

Ya I've returned a couple i5's now all with different issues, the first two I returned did not have any dead pixels but the last one which we even opened in store contained a few. Needless to say I was less than thrilled and now have my money back and no iMac.

I bought my iMac nearly a year ago (and just now extended my warranty) and there has always been this tiny black dot (dead pixel) near the center of the screen. I put off trying to do anything about it because I just didn't have the time to deal with it. But it has been quite a nuisance all this time, being that I'm currently studying Graphic Arts and when I'm using photoshop, I keep having to move around my project out of the way of the black dot so that I can get an accurate view. I guess I'm 10 short of 11 dead pixels, but no one should have to accommodate a defect.

I just shipped my iMac 27" i7 back to apple because of dead pixels. If my 2nd one has it, I'm going to ask for a refund and probably buy one at the local store or just give up and buy the Dell 3008WFP 30" for my PC. ;(
