So I have a gmail account synced with Mail using IMAP. I really love this system, but sometimes I have HUGE bandwidth problems. Using a GMAIL account, I haven't deleted any of my emails in 5 years. Sometimes MAIL downloads new messages, and that's ok.

BUT sometimes, it decides that it needs to re-download absolutely all of my messages.

So all of a sudden the activity monitor says that it is downloading 20 of 40000 messages. etc.

This takes up a lot of bandwidth, and can take 30 minutes to complete.

Then the next day it does it again.

How to I stop this? I want my messages to be available on my comp and online, but this is ridiculous!

Thanks for any help!

Are you configured to instruct the server to delete mails when downloaded?

If you insist on leaving tens of thousands of mail on the server, move them to an archive folder so your MAIL client on your Mac won't be tempted to retrieve them when checking for new mail.
