Q: Transitions require "extra media" on clips

Greetings,

Inserting clips with transitions (by dragging the clip to the Viewer) isn't working, apparently due to the lack of "extra media" at the beginning and end of my clips. How does one include those extra frames in clips when using In and Out marks for making Subclips?

The FCE user manual states: "Important: When you perform an insert with transition edit, make sure that there is enough media at the beginning of the new clip and at the end of the previously edited clip to create the transition. Each source clip must have enough unused frames outside the defined edit points to equal half the duration of the default transition." I haven't found where in the manual they tell you how to add those frames.

I understand, thanks to Mr. Wolsky's online info, how to use the RR function to add those necessary frames. However, that is tedious and time consuming when one must do that for every transition. Is there some way to include the extra frames when you generate clips in the first place?

Many thanks,

Bob

Subclips should not be used for editing. They are really for organizing your clips and breaking up long media files into component clips. The subclips should then be edited individually with marked In and Out points allowing handles in the clips.

As you already have found out, FCE requires +Media Handles+ to create it's transitions.
There's no way I know of other than making sure you have in/out points set. Move in/outs to other than the exterme start or end of clips in the Viewer before editing to the Timeline.

Thanks, gentlemen. It seems clear that I haven't mastered the fundamentals of editing--making clips vs subclips, etc. Can you steer me toward a tutorial or other description of the proper steps?

I have several large media files, each containing a number of scenes of various subjects. In selecting out scenes for one particular subject, I've "cut" subclips from a number of media files and collected them in the Browser under my Project. These I put together on the Timeline in whatever order is appropriate (chronological, topical, etc). Apparently I should have made clips rather than subclips, but can't find the handle on how to do that.

Thanks for your help. BTW, in my original post, I should have said "...by dragging the clip to the Canvas...", not the Viewer.

Why not import the large clip to the Browser then set in/outs in the viewer for each section required?
FCE is non-destructive, the Browser clips aren't real media files, only pointers or file paths to the real media clips stored on a Scratch Disc.

This would be the same amount of work as importing bits to the Browser with the advatage of having media Handles, excepting the very start and end of a large imported clip.

Thanks very much, Al. I was pretty much doing that, but making a subclip in the Viewer and dragging it back to the Browser, where I gave it a name. I see now that I can set the In and Out marks, and drag from the Viewer to the Browser (without making a subclip) -- this puts a clip in the Browser with the required handles, and I can name it as before.

    Thanks again. Appreciate the help.
