Q: Magic Mouse keeps disconnecting from bluetooth

My magic mouse (with all updates properly installed and with USB Overdrive properly uninstalled) has a problem connecting and disconnecting from the computer. When I use the mouse for a few minutes, it will all of a sudden be non-responsive, and within a couple of seconds the "Connection Lost" message appears on the screen. If I wait another minute, and click the mouse button a few times, the mouse will reconnect. This happens periodically as I am using the computer.

In the console logs, I get these messages:

10/31/09 6:06:20 PM kernel [0eb48f00][AppleMultitouchDevice::willTerminate] entered
10/31/09 6:06:20 PM kernel [0eb48f00][AppleMultitouchDevice::stop] entered
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [0ffa3600][BNBMouseDevice::init][30] init is complete
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [0ffa3600][BNBMouseDevice::handleStart][30] Done
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [08701100][AppleMultitouchHIDEventDriver::start] entered
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [09f11680][AppleMultitouchDevice::start] entered

The first message is when the mouse disconnects, and the rest are when it reconnects.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Unibody MacBook Pro (CTO 2.8Ghz, 4GB RAM), Mac OS X (10.6.1)

    Well Apple say to me that the tap-to-disconnect problem means they will replace the mouse. 'Will' is the significant word here as, I am told, they can't enter the magic mouse into their systems yet to order the replacement so I have to wait (or visit a service centre or genius bar).

    Technology!

    I see the same tapping behavior. Replacing the batteries with fresh ones made it happen less often, probably not because the batteries are more charged but because the metal contacts are cleaner.

    I have discovered that if I hold the aluminum side of the Magic Mouse against the bottom front grill of the Mac Pro and click, the bluetooth connection is restored. This is working pretty reliably. Unfortunately, I have to use this trick 5 or 6 times a day, so I am probably going to go back to the Mighty Mouse.

    Well I have received a replacement MM and, shock!, it behaves the same - tapping disconnects and I have also had occasional disconnects that are not down to tapping. So Apple are going to send me another replacement (this could be a long story). I tried a different make of battery, and even tried 'enhancing' the connection by reducing the play with small pieces of aluminium foil between the battery and mouse contacts. No significant change although the makeshift enhancement did seem to mean that a heavier tap was required - it's difficult to judge such things.

    I otherwise like the MM very much and am resisting giving it up.

    The tapping issue is real... I can duplicate it again and again. I suspect the battery terminal connectors are ever so slightly becoming disconnected from the battery causing a "hard boot", if you will, of the mouse.

    I took a few pieces of paper and rolled them into a tube and wedged it between the batteries and covering casing.. This prevents the batteries from moving. This simple hack seems to have solved the issue... Mouse has been working flawlessly.

    This Magic Mouse works perfectly with my MacBook Pro and iMac; the problem for me occurs strictly with the Mac Pro under the desk at work. So for those of us with Mac Pro problems, I do not think tinkering with the mouse is going to help.

    Since reading this thread, I can confirm that picking the mouse up and setting it back down on the desk (as you sometimes do) will cause a disconnect. This is repeatable and will happen every time, even if done fairly gently.

    I have a feeling it depends on the make of the batteries, since the ones that came with it originally never had this problem, but ever since I dropped in the rechargeables I am using now, every slight knock of the mouse causes a disconnect.

    Going to try wedging something in there as previously suggested to see if that fixes the problem.

    Cheers,
    Chris.

    My Magic Mouse has just started doing this exact thing and it is driving me NUTZ!!! I have tried securing the batteries with cardboard, i have filed the little nipple on the battery to try to get a better connection, all to no avail. My next step will be trying some strategically placed foil on the connectors, if it does not work I will return it, I really don't want to so if anyone has any ideas i would love to hear them (Apple that includes you too!!)

    Did the paper spacer and it solved the problem.

    MM #3 is the same as the first two. I can't get the paper wedging to make any significant difference. All I have to decide now is whether the inconvenience caused by the problem outweighs all the things I like about the MM.

    I have same issue with new Magic Mouse
    Apple devs should investigate the cause and update the soft as needed

    I took my Magic Mouse (a very early unit) to an Apple store about a month ago and requested a replacement. I have not had the disconnection problem with the new mouse. I believe there may be truth to the hypothesis that the first shipments were defective.

    Yup, holding it vertically and taping it disconnects it for me too... I'm on this discussion page because, like the rest of you, my Magic Mouse keeps disconnecting. This usually happens when waking from sleep, but also at random times. Oddly enough this has only happened since I changed the batteries. The first two lots of batteries lasted a month each before I got the dreaded 20% message; this lot have gone from 100% to 73% in the space of a couple of days. Yes, I replaced the batteries in case they were duds, but no difference.

    I came on here because I was getting a disconnect every 20 or so seconds.. Turns out it was indeed the moving of the mouse, then tapping back onto the mat (i'm working on photoshop, so do it a lot).. this is really annoying.. do you guys reckon it's something Apple can fix with a SW udpate? surely it's a hardware fault?

    Also, regarding the batteries.. I too have noticed that since the first lot of batteries, the battery life is terrible.. goes for the keyboard too.. first sets lasted ages.. now i have to change the batteries every couple of days or so

    Update: I remembered that the previous (non-disconnecting) set of batteries were Duracell rather than the Eveready sort I had in when the problem occurred. Now the mouse will only disconnect if I hold it vertical and tap it quite hard in the desk... Weird, some batteries must be a little fatter than others.
