Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Just wanted to update this thread about my 17-inch Intel iMac (Early 2006).

I took my iMac to the SoHo, NY Apple Store with the case number I received from AppleCare. The ignorant 'genius' I met wasn't (conveniently) aware of any vertical lines issue on the early-2206 iMacs! He looked up my AppleCare case# and said there was no mention of a free repair and asked if was interested in a quote for the repair (which I knew was about $600).

So, I called AppleCare again and this time I was connected to a level 2 specialist and after asking a few basic questions, he gave me an authorization number and asked me to 'quick-drop' my iMac.

I got the LCD replaced free of cost in 2 days!

There is the occasional south end of a north bound burro working for Apple!

On December 25, 2009 I first noticed a thin (possibly the width of a pixel)green 50 cm line, with a flickering top end, on the lower right side of my 17 inch iMac LCD, about 85 cm from the edge. I noticed that when various windows are opened over the line it suddenly extends to the top of the screen. I am calling Apple, here in Canada, this morning hoping that the problem can be repaired free of charge. And yes, my serial number is a W86... The iMac was purchased in 2006.

Hi, David - have you succeeded with the second repair? Essentially, two things to keep in mind in such situation, as per my experience:

-- The same unsuccessful first repair story here. I had to send iMac back to technicians, to have one more LCD panel fit - that time was lucky, it works every day since, just fine. Technician, I spoke with after repairs, said it was just the LCD replaced once again. Under examination, he noticed something odd on the contacts band of the first replacement panel, they received and fit. Thus, I am blaming defective contacts on panels.

-- For this fix, we got after warranty, there was period of two months, that same issue would be addressed again, if first attempt to repair turns to be unsuccessful. Thus, logic board or not - repair, authorization was received for, has to be done as well, as to hold that couple of months. If not, that was repair not good enough to count.

As is seen from posts, currently overall issue of lines turns to issue of proper communication with Apple - once you speak to knowledgeable and competent person, things are addressed as they should be in case, given.

Yes, the service center ordered a second display and replaced the one from the first repair. Everything has been fine since then.

    Hello,

I came across this discussion and I'm still a bit suprised, I had no idea the number of iMacs affected with this problem was so large!

I bought my iMac in July 2006 (it is the first Intel version, with the 17'' screen). Maybe 2-3 months after its warranty ended (here in Portugal, we have 2 years of warranty, it's the law), a vertical line appeared in the right side of the screen. From there, it grew uncontrollably, until almost filling the right side of the screen with blue, magenta, and yellow lines (I stopped counting them, but I believe there are way more than 30 of them!)

I mentioned the problem in my local Apple reseller (we don't have any official Apple stores here) and he confirmed what I feared: the display panel probably needed replacing, and being out of warranty, the repair would probably cost more than the computer itself was worth.

So, I started using it with an external display. But after reading so much feedback on this subject, and noticing that some of the posters here had their iMacs repaired for free after their warranty expired, I think I might need to talk with the local Apple reseller, and see how it goes.

    Thanks!

(by the way, some of you mention a "list" where you place your iMac serial number - where can I find it?)

    Hey, bsod -

you might try first concentrating on your Apple communication channel, instead of the misty-list

If not successful, just tell here. We've got some broused group in there for your sake. Personal sentiments obligate me towards Portugal and Porto (also Douro), in particular, so just let serve you.

Anyway: the fault of your Apple device is not the rule for Apple, that seems to be best circumstance, enjoy that ride!

My post got deleted as it was considered either 'off-topic' or a 'rant'. Conscious though incredulous at either description I will just say that I have (so far) one vertical turquoise lien to the left of centre on my i-Mac 17" intel duo core with a serial number starting W865. Depressed doesn't describe it.

I just got a quote for about 500USD to fix the problem from my local Apple supplier. I haven't heard of this issue before in South Africa but I'm gonna fight it here.

That may well be more of an issue for you. The Apple Warranty appears to be different in South Africa than in much of the rest of the world. For example, unlike for most other countries, there is no listing for Apple Care in South Africa on Apple's Apple Care pages.

Hi all! I belong to the club too. Luckily I found this topic and I got in contact with Apple...
Well, Appple customer care just wrote me "call us to this number", but I did not. I know that a call center means loosing at least 30 minutes. I contacted an apple center in a nearby city (50km from me) and they told me very politely to take my imac 17" to their lab for the repair. All smooth, all free of charges, I took my imac home a week later... with a strange contact on integrated webcam (caused by them), but it was no such thing. I was pretty happy...
    97 days later...
a week after the end of the 90 days warranty... ta-dah! a new vertical line appears! Oh joy! -__-
I went straight back to the Apple center, asking them for a new repair. Luckily again, they understood the problem and (i think) made an exception, repairing the imac again, free of charge.
I have to say that I use my mac just an hour or two in the evening. I keep it in the living room, away from direct sunlight, or strong heat, I am a no smoker, so I can say I treat him well. I don't understand why it showed that **** line again. In my humble opinion, this is NOT a good thing... or am I wrong?
I would like to ask you if something like that happened to any of you.. and if there's a way to extend the warranty after the repair. Is it still possible to buy the extended Applecare?
    Waiting for an answer

It's nice to hear that apple might be coming through WRT this for some.

BTW, there seems to be a lot of (possibly related) info here:

I still have a late 2006 white iMac. On 08 February 2010 it developed its first yellow vertical line. Now today, 09 March 2010, it developed its second vertical line; this one is cyan.
