Jan 18, 2010 8:45 AM in response to pjensen4by hibiscus ro,I had to take my Imac for a replacement optical drive. These drives must be defective since many have problems with them. My Imac is only 6 months old. They installed a Sony drive that is in the new Imacs. -
Jan 18, 2010 9:32 AM in response to hibiscus roby JustCallMe Dude,I looked at my invoice the other day , mine is 6 months outside the warranty ...
As I stated in my last, mine has had this problem for a while but never all that bad so I just wrote it off as maybe a media problem and not the drive itself.
AFter I did a clean install of SL , it now rejects all CD's ...
I have done lots of Googling and, I'm prepping to replace the drive myself and, since I'll be braking down my Imac I'll up-grade my hard drive at the same time ... -
Jan 19, 2010 2:22 PM in response to Wynne G Oldmanby Wynne G Oldman,I got my iMac back from the Apple Store working perfectly. I'm happy with the job they've done, and think that it was a reasonable price for the labour involved. I would have been happier if it hadn't broken down in the first place, but there you go. -
Jan 19, 2010 9:00 PM in response to Wynne G Oldmanby JustCallMe Dude,Its saddening and sickening to read about all these people having the very same issue with their Macs...
To be honest there really is not all that much work involved in replacing the optical drive, more so than say a MacPro or an Old PowerMac for sure but, nothing that cant handle.
I had the thought of video taping, taking pictures and noting all the steps involved when I do dive into my Intel IMac.
The way I view it is, I'll learn something and, for less than what I'll have to pay Apple for replacing just the optical drive, I can toss in a hard drive up-grade to a WD Caviar Black 1 TB and, give the inside
a really good cleaning. I could only imagine what all has built-up inside this 16 month old Imac.
Nevertheless I'm glad it work out for you... -
Feb 1, 2010 1:13 PM in response to JustCallMe Dudeby UstalovemyiMac,I've been researching this issue for about a month now since discovering my UJ-846 is completely useless (ejects any and all disc types after spinning for a bit). Did not want to add to the forum with another 'complaint'. There appears to be nearly 50,000 similar failures in the apple forum. I also paid for extended Applecare which expired 4 months ago. I am also of the opinion that this should not have occurred with an Apple product. Apple's reputation should be at stake. Therefore, Apple should stand by their entire line of products with failing optical drives and replace them at no cost to their loyal users. The drive manufacturers should be compelled to provide the replacements to Apple. -
Feb 1, 2010 1:54 PM in response to UstalovemyiMacby JustCallMe Dude,The thing that I find most perplexing is , Apple does not manufacture the optical drives, they purchase these drives from another manufacturing vendor. That being said Apple could hold this vendor accountable , take care of their faithful customers and not really be out a dime.
These type of issues are what get companies such as Apple caught up in class action law suites,
It would not shock me at all if that was to the end result. We all know that Apple is fully aware of the issue however rather than addressing this issue properly they opt to ignore it and, their thousands
of complaining customers....
Ignoring major complaints from your customer base is never a good thing, if ignored long enough
the end result will cost you more than if you had nipped it at the bud. -
Mar 4, 2010 2:06 PM in response to pjensen4by bricula,Ok, I belong to the club too... and I wonder why I am surprised.
My imac intel (2006) had the infamous problem with the lcd screen. every week a new coloured vertical line appears. I discovered that for that problem there was a special warranty and the guys at macstore changed it.
the fact is that 97 days later the lines show up again.... not a very good sign.
Meanwhile my imac g5 hard drive just collapsed after a software update.
Last week, after a software update, my 2006 intel showed me this message at the startup "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button"
I tried to run utility disk with the original dvd and then I discovered my mac spits everything: movies, data cd or dvd, music cd... everything
so, once again, thanks apple. keep up the good (?!?) job. -
Mar 7, 2010 5:12 AM in response to Wynne G Oldmanby Kenners01,Thanks for the update Wynne, have joined this unfortunate list and will revert to Apple here in Switzerland too see if after sales customer service is any better than sales service. -
Apr 24, 2010 12:53 PM in response to pjensen4by Ruby187,I just came across this It seems discussion group after search for a resolution to the same problem all of you are having. I've had a problem with by optical drive accepting DVDs for some time now. Naively, I thought it was possibly related to the type of media I was using - after all, Apple wouldn't use a crappy optical drive in a top of the line iMac - would they ? Until now I never had to use the drive all that much but recently decided it was time time make backups of my most important documents. When I discovered that hundreds - possibly thousands of other Apple customers are experiencing the exact same problem, I was shocked. I paid more than $1,650 for this MAC with the expectation that I was buying a quality product. I will contact my local Apple Store to consult them regarding a resolution to the problem. My 1 year warranty expired in October 2009. If I find out that I'll have to pay for this repair when Apple very well knew that this was an existing problem, I will lick my losses and sell it 'as is' - but will never buy another Apple product again.
It is my hope that Apple will do the right thing and cover the costs for the repair. -
Apr 29, 2010 11:28 AM in response to pjensen4by California Films,Wow, super frustrating to see it is a widespread issue and Apple is not doing anything, except charging you to replace the optical drive.
I tried to find if there was any firmware updates to fix that common issue but nothing is available...
All my CDs or DVDs get ejected after 56 seconds. -
May 12, 2010 12:17 PM in response to pjensen4by Nick Rooney,Add another 2 to the list. 17" iMac 1.83GHz Intel. The 24" in my signature had AppleCare, and the drive was replaced by Apple. It started having drive issues about a year and a half into ownership.
My 17" is out of AppleCare... -
May 12, 2010 2:26 PM in response to pjensen4by Laksidemac,My iMac is 20" 2 GHz intel Core 2 Due. My first CD/DVD drive after a Period of time after warranty ran out would no longer recognize any CD or DVD, even Apple OS DVD. I had an external CD/DVD drive so I did nothing. Later on my house had a dust problem and the insurance paid to have my iMac opened and cleaned. So at that time I had Apple's drive replaced. All was well for 6 months. Now it will not recognize any CD/DVD, even the operating system one. So I'm back where I started a bum internal drive and the same old external drive still working. I have gone from Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard during this time with Snow Leopard being installed via the external drive. As I see it the problem is not the drives but the Apple operating or connecting systems in some way. Any ideas on what I might do as I have no intent of replacing the internal hard drive again. I can do everything I need with the external drive, but I'm not happy with my iMac. Thanks -
May 13, 2010 10:23 PM in response to pjensen4by Get Bent,Hi, has anybody tried this (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2801). Resetting the System Management Controller(SMC), I'm getting ready to try this as a last-ditch effort, but first I need to thoroughly back up my HD. Tim... -
May 17, 2010 10:27 AM in response to JustCallMe Dudeby Nellisoft,Add me to the list...
I have the "Mid 2007" 24-inch aluminum iMac with a Matshita UJ-85J drive, firmware FM0S.
About a year ago, I started having random drive problems that were usually fixed by restarting.
Then about two months ago, I went to burn some double-layer DVDs (after not having used the drive for awhile) and it kept failing without actually burning anything; the discs worked fine in a Macbook I have access to, as well as an external burner.
Got up today and put in a disc to install some new software, it spun the disc up and down a few times, and then ejected it; tried an older burned disc and the system disc with the same results.
I guess I'll try the SMC reset and lens cleaning disc, but I'm not very optimistic.
The computer is long out of warranty, I don't have Applecare, and I can't afford to get the drive replaced by Apple even if I wanted to (unless they decide to do it for free).
Has anybody tried that replacement OWC drive for the iMac G5?
Does it fit in the aluminum models? -
May 17, 2010 4:04 PM in response to pjensen4by zootrees, count me in too, its been going on for months now with my 24" imac. I am getting to where I can't take it. I couldn't find anything on it so i gave up, looked again to see if others had the same issue. I am coming up on my second year off the warranty...I am gonna have to thing about what to do. $450 or however much it costs to get apple to fix it, is pretty steep.
