Q: Several odd things - linked or not?

A number of odd things have been happening in the last few days. I'm not sure what to make of them and whether they're all connected, or whether my Mac Pro has simply had unrelated hissy fits and will now go back to its normal uber-reliable self.

Firstly in the dock we've noticed a new icon appear in the dock for a second or two before closing itself and vanishing again. It happens so quickly I can't be certain how often it's going on since if I'm looking elsewhere it registers as little more than brief movement in the dock. It's taken a few days but I've now had a good enough look at it to go browsing through the Applications folder and identify it. It's Epudl.app and appears to be related to an Epson printer I bought and installed last week. I ran it deliberately hoping to have a look at what it's been doing and maybe tweak the preferences but the **** thing closed itself after a couple of seconds just as it's been doing when it launches on its own. Anybody know what this does? I've googled and seen that others have seen it and that some seem to think it's also linked to using Firefox, which personally I don't much since I prefer Safari. I'm not sure if there's anything in that or if it's just because the icons are superficially similar that possibly people think it reacts to Firefox launching. Since it happens whether I use Firefox or not I think that's a red herring. But what I don't know is what it does and whether I really need it. An updater of some kind perhaps? Anybody know?

Second, and possibly third, issues - this morning I flicked the Mac on and went off to boil a kettle. When I came back there was my Vista desktop looking back at me. Uh? I never told it to boot into Windows. So I checked Boot Camp to see if somehow the start up disk had been changed but couldn't get the regular dialogue box. Just stuff about screen and keyboard brightness. Double uh? So anyway, while Vista was up I did an AV update and installed the drivers for the new printer before restarting, and this time I held the option key just to make sure I got the choice. The two disks came up as usual. Selected the OS X one and when I got my normal desktop it tried to autorun the blasted printer CD that I'd stupidly left in the superdrive. After I ejected it the keyboard and mouse stopped responding. Tried a second mouse, ditto. So I had to use the power button to switch off, after which I turned it off at the wall for a minute or two. Turned it back on and did nothing but watch. It seemed to take longer to get to the desktop than normal but it did come up, and the mouse and keyboard work fine.

I've verified the disks and repaired permissions and started looking for info on what's going on and whether or not Epudl.app has anything to do with it, and that's more or less where I am right now. The only other thing is that while I've been typing this it occurred to me to check the Start Up disk prefs pane in System Preferences. "Mac OS X, 10.6.2 on Mac Pro" is the one that's highlighted, but oddly the padlock is open. I'm sure that's not how it was left and it won't lock. It is clickable but all that's happening is that "Click the lock to prevent further changes." is replaced with "something else for a split second and then it's back to how it was before I clicked it. And I really mean a split second - I had to record the screen and play the recording back slowly to find out what it said. "Deauthenticating..." And that's right now after repairing permissions and verifying the disks. Triple uh?

So, anybody got any ideas? Should I trash Epudl.app knowing that I can always get it back from Time Machine if necessary? And is it linked to the other odd behaviour from this morning?

Mac Pro and Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.2), Occasional Vista user

that new icon appearing in your doc is Epudl.app. i get it too now, since i have installed the ******* epson printer software mess. love the epson printers, but their software is a nightmare.

i don't use bootcamp or any other windoze emulation software, so i can't comment on that part of it, but i wouldn't be surprised if Epudl also was responsible.

i have submitted a support email with epson and will fight it out with them. will post their responses here once something useful is hashed out. if i should get so lucky to talk to someone over there with half a brain.

    Hi Benjamin.

I'd half forgotten I'd put this question up. Yes, I found the epudl.app by going through the Applications folder until I saw the same icon, although I was lucky that there's an alias in there because the app itself, as you've probably seen, is tucked away in an Epson subfolder in the Library. I sent an email to Epson Australia asking what it is, what is does, why it keeps appearing in the dock for such a brief period, whether it should function differently, whether it was a component that should have uninstalled itself after I put their software on, and whether (expecting a denial, natch) it could be linked to the other issues. What I got back was this:

+"It appears the installation may of got corrupted, as this is the first issue we have come across with the problem you are having. We would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and reset the printing system.+

+There also may be an issue with the CD do you can try downloading and installing the 10.5 driver from the Epson web site as this works with 10.6."+

In fairness none of the other issues have happened again so I think that's probably coincidental to Epudl.app, but since posting the question we've been keeping an eye on the Macbook Pro and sure enough Epudl keeps putting in brief appearances on the dock on that too. Bootcamp and Vista have been used on the MBP in the past but not for a while, and in fact the Windows partition doesn't even exist on it anymore - I gave it back to OS X months ago. All that and the fact I've booted into Vista normally a couple of times since my OP makes me think it was one of those weird computer problems that's dependant on such an unlikely combination of factors that it's nigh on impossible to replicate and the Epudl.app behaviour is simply something unrelated that happened at the same time. But if Epson think it's a bum install on both my Macs and you've got the same thing with it I have to say I think they're wrong. It also annoyed me slightly that so much of what I asked went completely unanswered. As you say, great printers but....

If I get anywhere I'll post the details back here.

I have experienced a similar issue,it is actually popping up every minute or so and as I type. I had a similar issue after a clean install of snow leopard. After deleting the app, and after a reinstall of the epson snow leopard drivers my computer would not log in to my user account. It just hung on the background image. So three clean installs now and I am having to manually bring my user settings and folders across. I am unsure if deleting this software has altered something else on my system. I removed it "safely" using a mac cleaning program. Possibly it has removed another essential program. I am currently unable to print and my system is broken.

Unsure of a fix. Will I delete this epudl app again?

This little EPUDL thing is driving me crazy. I have deleted all epson data/programs on my computer but it is obvious that there is another link or synonym to this icon. Nasty is that this thing pops up every minute and all other aplications on the screen are blocked for a few seconds. I have also tried to look in the system. ZERO!! Interesting is that if I turn off the internet connection, the symbol doesnt pop up any more so guess it has something to do with an updater which is working constandly in the background. As there isnt anone here in any of the apple stores who could help me with that, I hope that there any one on the net who could help me with that. I would be more then happy.
    Regards, Tom

I think (hope!) I got it.

The little bas*ard is being launched by another Epson application, namely Epusp.app. This in turns gets launched as agent, its configuration file is in /Library/LaunchAgents/com.epson.Epusp.plist

The application itself is located close to Epudl.app, i.e. in /Library/Application\ Support/Epson/InkjetPrinter/Epusp.app (Epudl.app is in /Library/Application\ Support/Epson/InkjetPrinter/Epudl.app). The main program is /Library/Application\ Support/Epson/InkjetPrinter/Epusp.app/Contents/MacOS/Epusp and it's quite interesting to launch strings on it:

$ strings Epusp | grep Epudl
            open /Library"/Application Support"/Epson/InkjetPrinter/Epudl.app
            Epudl

(there is also a scary 'http://go.epson.com/redirect.aspx' in the program...) So it seems that Epusp launches Epudl.

To disable it I used launchctl, which controls launchd:

            $ launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchAgents/com.epson.Epusp.plist

I also saw another Epson-related file in LaunchAgents, so I disabled it as well.

    I hope this helps,

        Flavio.

Hi Flavio, Thank you for your help but also this didn't work. I do not have any epson files or software on my computer any more because I have delete already. Also Epusp I could not find. I am sure it is an updater because as long as I am not connected with the internet, it doesnt show up.

    I have tried to go a bid deeper into this whole mac system as I am quite fresh with mac. What means;

    **+$ strings Epusp | grep Epudl+**
    **+open /Library"/Application Support"/Epson/InkjetPrinter/Epudl.app+**
    *Epudl*

**+(there is also a scary 'http://go.epson.com/redirect.aspx' in the program...) So it seems that Epusp launches Epudl.+**

**+To disable it I used launchctl, which controls launchd:+**

    **+$ launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchAgents/com.epson.Epusp.plist+**

    Thanks again.
I get the feeling that MAC is driving me nuts. Not even in the MAC store they understood were I was talkabout

    Hey!!
    I got it.

    Go to Macintish HD
    Libary
    Printers
    EPSON
    Inkjet Printer2
    Auto Setup Tool
    Then you see:
    A) EPUDL
    B) EPIJ AUTO SETUPTOOL2

DELETE THIS F*ING "A" and you can sleep well.
Then: Do not forget to empty your trash bin and restart your computer.

For the last 15 minutes it didnt pop up again.
Thank you MAC support for your help. Next time I will ask Bill Gates.
