Yet another bug? Many photos in my library came from a camera with the date set to 1/1/2001 (thanks, Honey). Naturally, this messes up the date orientation of iPhoto "Events".

I'm willing to work with that by adjusting the dates of a few hundred photos. However, the "Photo/Adjust date and time..." does not work for me. It appears to be working (accepts the date, no error message), but when I check the dates of the target photos, none have been changed. I'm not sure, but I think this may have been working at one point (or maybe I just wasn't checking up on it and did not realize it was not working).

Is anyone else seeing this problem? Am I doing something dumb? (wouldn't be the first time)

Regards,
RL

This seems to work for me, so here are a few questions:

    1) you selected photos and then selected Adjust Date And Time, right?
    2) did you check the date on the original files or within iPhoto?
    3) what dates were you checking? The file created/modified dates don't get changed, some dates in the EXIF info do -- Original Date and Digitized Date.

This seems to work for me, so here are a few questions:

    1) you selected photos and then selected Adjust Date And Time, right?

Yes. I have tried selecting both multiple and single photos. The original incorrect date remains (as shown by the metadata at the bottom of the left column).

I have several smart albums that group myphotos by year (2000, 2001,...2007). The 2000 smart album contains the photos that I cannot change.I have attempted to adjust the dates both from the smart album and from the various events that contain them.

[Aside: I used these smart albums to export all photos into jpg folders by year when I was having library database integrity problems. This revealed error-handling weaknesses and poor diagnostics in the iPhoto export process.]

    2) did you check the date on the original files or within iPhoto?

Yes, I checked the box that says change original files.

    3) what dates were you checking? The file created/modified dates don't get changed, some dates in the EXIF info do -- Original Date and Digitized Date.

The metadata dates shown when one clicks on the photo in iPhoto (not the file system date).

Any suggestions on how I can help diagnose the problem?

    Thanks for your help!

    Follow-up information:

Further testing has shown that it CAN adjust the date on some (possibly most?) files. I tested it by adjusting the minutes & seconds of some recent photos, and it works (though it doesn't always change it to precisely the time I have entered).

So what file characteristic could prevent the date from being changed?

    Thanks for you help.

That was interesting. The posting process dropped the body of my message. Are there forbidden characters? Here goes again.

    I think I'm having a similar problem.

With my photos 'sorted by date' my June 2007 photos are out of order, and are way back in 2004. There's eleven photos, and the dates on the photos themselves are correct (they range from 6/1/07 - 6/23/07), but what's wrong are the range dates underneath the "event title". It says "Dec 6, 2004 - Jun 23, 2007". I don't know where the program is picking up that 2004 date from?

I see that I can change the event title by doubleclicking on it, but nothing happens when I click on the date range - that stays grayed out.
I've tried going into the photo info to edit the date, but that appears to just edit the dates on the photos themselves (which, as I said, are already correct).

How do I change that date range under event title? I want these photos in 2007 where they belong.

For some reason, the "Adjust date and time..." started working again for me, this time for any photos I tried it on. There was a good deal of intermediate reorganizing of photos, reloading iPhoto, reboots, etc., but I don't have any idea what specifically caused it to begin working again.

Janet -- the problem you describe (event dates not reflecting the dates of the enclosed photos) is described in a couple of other threads on this forum. My experience is that sometimes it does; sometimes it doesn't.

There is no fix, but a work-around has been described:
    - clear any existing flags
    - open the event
    - select a photo & flag it (bottom of screen "flag")
    - under the events tab, select create event from flagged photos
    - this will open both events at once,
drag the rest of the photos into the new event
    - revise event name as desired
    - clear event flags

Sounds like a lot, and there is probably an easier way, but it is fairly quick and should allow you to use the sort events by date without messing things up too badly...

Thank you Roger! That was the needed fix. Yeah, it was a bit of work, but at least my photos are in the right year now. Thanks again!

    Roger:

For some reason if there's a space at the beginning of a paragraph the following text will not be displayed. Very strange behavior indeed.

    Further information:

I've discovered that "Adjust date..." sometimes works fine, sometimes not at all, and sometimes only partially. For example, I've been trying to repair damage to a multi-day vacation event. Some of the dates with ranges of photos were way out of whack (I had been blaming my lovely wife, but now I'm not so sure). Anyway, I select a range of photos with erroneous dates and "Adjust Date.." to the correct. I get the progress bar showing change-in-progress, then complete; I check the first photo and it's correct. I note, however, that the event dates are still wrong. I figure that this is simply a manifestation of an iPhoto bug (incorrect event dates), but then I notice that the full range of dates has not been correctly adjusted (some portion of the end of the range is still wrong). So I reselect the dates that have not yet been changed and repeat the "adjust date". More, but not all of them, have been adjusted. So I repeat until they have all been changed. Curiously, the event dates are now correct.

Has anyone else observed this odd behavior? Am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks!

  • 10. "Photo/Adjust date and time..." : beware of TIFF/JPEG silent conversion !!!
    D.F. Level 1 Level 1 (20 points)
A bit off topic, but I'd like to mention that the "Adjust date and time" function in iPhoto 08 creates an *ENTIRELY NEW JPEG FILE* if "Modify the original files" is checked, even if the original file is not JPEG. (And, of course, it deletes the original file with no warning...)

This is a problem for me, because all my iPhoto library is made of TIFF files instead of JPEG, for quality reasons. Some of these TIFF files don't have any "Original date" or "Digitized date" EXIF tags, and I would have loved to add those dates without altering the original files. Alas, it's not possible in iPhoto 08.

By the way, I have yet to find one utility doing that. Any suggestions are welcome.

It seems to do more than that. I converted a jpg to a tiff and checked its metadata before importing into iPhoto. The EXIF and other data were carried over from the jpg to the tiff. I then tried using the Change Date and Time option. The resulting file, still the original, had all of the EXIF data stripped from the file as well as the color profile information. And the date change was not reflected in the file.

I ran the same test on a jpg file and it did change the EXIF date in the original file, kept all of the metadata and did not create a modified version.

i have successfully changed the date but after changing many pictures (and beginning to wonder) i went back and checked the date on the original picture (on another computer). For some reason, iPhoto changes the date (favorite date is 1/2/2003). But when i change it, the event doesn't fully recognize the change and places the date range as the original (bad) date and the new dates so the events show up in the wrong place.

Any ideas why iPhoto sometimes changes the date when it imports?

Eventually fixed by updates from Apple.
