I have a white MacBook, bought in early 2008, and the handrest on the right hand side, right next to the edge of the front, exactly where the "spacer" from the lid rests, if the lid is closed, is cracked. I never tossed it around carelessly, and it doesn't look like it's the result of an accident - it appears as if the "spacer" cracked the case over opening and shutting the lid for years.
Has anybody seen similar damage on a MacBook? Does anyone know where and how to get it replaced? How much it'll likely cost?
I'm located on Germany, so I won't be able to stop by at the next Apple Store, and there's no Apple Care plan for this MacBook.
While no one can absolutely guarantee that such damage will not again occur, Apple service providers install clear plastic shims beneath the assembly when the replacement service is performed, to limit the likelihood of future issues.
Mine has three cracks and it's less than 3 years old. I went to Apple store and they asked me to make an appointment, but made it sound like it will cost me. If it's under 3 years will they replace it for free? Is there some statement from Apple saying it will cover the cost if its under 3 years?
