Keep metal things, such as cable connectors, rings, and things like that away from the palm rest on the front of the Mac. Use your trackpad with only clean hands to prevent a build up of dirt. It's what I do to keep it clean and scratch-free.
Another thing you could do is keep your Mac's 'lid' closed when you're not using it. This can also help to protect the screen.

I have the latest Macbook. And I use the Moshi palm guard. Its is perfect, gives the wrist area extra grip too, as well as softer feel. I love it

the edge of my white macbook, where my wrist would rest on the front is cracked and keeps cracking more.. it has no rough handling or anything. is this something that you think they would be able to replace ?

Authorized Apple dealers and service providers will replace—at no cost—the keyboard and case top assembly of a white non-unibody MacBook for this issue, so long as your machine is not more than 3 years old and does not exhibit what Apple terms customer abuse, including spill damage. Your machine does not have to be covered by the initial one-year warranty, or by an AppleCare extension to qualify. There are no parts or labor charges associated with this replacement.

This program is entirely different from a similar program which replaced white keyboard and case top assemblies which became discolored because of the interaction with the plastic they were constructed of, and the environment. That original program to address discoloration has expired.

Not necessarily, try the suggestions I wrote earlier. I'm sure the problem is not that bad if you just keep it clean. You also don't have to buy the Moshi guard either, I bet there's plenty of others out there on the market.
