Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Quick update. Today my third vertical line appeared. So the pattern so far is...

    • 08 February 2010: First vertical line (yellow)
    • 09 March 2010: Second vertical line (cyan)
    • 12 May 2010: Third vertical line (magenta)

It seems that a vertical line shows up once every 1-2 months. I'm still waiting to replace this 17-inch iMac with a 21.5-inch model, but I'm still not convinced that the yellow tinted screen, and high pitched noise, problems are solved.

Good News! I have this same issue and am getting it repaired for free.

I started by calling Apple who scheduled me a time to go by my local store. The local store told me that there was an extended warranty to repair this but it had ended.

I returned to my office and called Apple again and explained that it didn't make sense to end a warranty for a manufacture's defect. I was past up to level-two support who told me that the local store was wrong and that this problem had NO EXPIRATION DATE. So I am stopping by today to get it repaired for free.

So, call and talk to Apple, if the person tells you it's not covered, tell them to review my ticket to find that it is. My case number is 161121397.

    Good luck,
    Keith

I am experiencing the same issue. I called Apple yesterday, and I will be going to an Apple store next week. Did you get yours fixed? If so, how long it took? What did they do? Do they have to ship the unite somewhere else to have it fixed, or can they do it on site?

This is unbelievable! It appears that lots of people are having this problem.
    Thanks!

My iMac also recently developed pink vertical line. It is 17 inch Early 2006 iMac. I bought iMac from Apple authorized dealer in Egypt in 2006. Now a days I live in UAE. Warranty, I believe is expired. Would Apple store in UAE repair this free of cost as being suggested in this thread elsewhere? Apprecite advice.

Add me to the list . . . my Mac is only 2.5 months old and flickering vertical line appeared 2 days ago. (Solid yellow when against a black background.) Didn't have time to slog through all 30 pages here to see if anyone with a latest generation iMac has also posted, but flabbergasted at how far back this issue seems to stretch! Calling Apple shortly . . . better be a warranty issue!

So...I am joining the group with my little 1" line near the bottom of the screen. It appears a bluish green and starts from the bottom about 1/3 the way from the left side of the screen. They gave me a bunch of system resets that did not work. This is our business system and we cannot afford to be without the computer for a repair. Computer is 6 months old. This is also my first Mac experience, so I am very disappointed. Does anyone have this problem fixed but it happened again with a new display?

Update: After checking if there were any firmware updates that addressed this issue that I may not have installed (not the case), Apple Phone Support made appt. for me to take iMac back to Apple store on Saturday for hands-on hardware troubleshooting. Will post results after. (BTW, have to give support a big thumbs up--described problem online; selected time for call back; got call within 1 minute of selected time; very courteous, friendly & helpful.)

I also got vertical lines in my IMAC which is early 2006 serial number W860XXXXU2N, got the first one 2 months ago, and now i have 4 blue and 1 pink line in my screen.
I bought the computer in japan, and brought it to Brazil, and called apple care here... what they said that they wouldnt fix it for free... They told me that there were 3 years extended warranty but it was all gone already and I would have to take it to a authorized store to fix it, called the store and the price for repair would cost around U$500, which I find too expensive, a new PC screen would cost U$200!!
I even called US apple care, but they said that they couldnt do anything!!!
and he also said that i wouldnt expect the computer to work for more than 3 years without having problems... WHAT??? I expect apple computer to work fine untill I find it obsolete and buy a new one as I did with my old PCs!!! by the way I did bought a macbook pro before having this problems with my imac desktop, now i wish I hadnt!!!

hey guys I have good news
my line showed up last week when I got back from vacation. Today I took it to the Apple store and they are repairing it for free. Apparently this is a common problem and they will fix it fro free if your Serial # lies with in their range of affected computers. Mine's a first gen intel 2006 iMac SN is W86XXXX6U2N so if you have this problem take it into your local tor and see if your serial # falls within their list

    Keith,

Jut want to thank you for the advice and for listing your case #.

I started to get the lines on my display last year and after checking with a few people, figured I would eventually have to get a new computer. I called support this morning and got the same response as you. I told the guy that I had done some research and was aware of a law suit filed regarding the issue and he informed me that there were repairs being covered, but of course not for my model. I gave him your case # and he reviewed it and told me that your's had been covered, but the program had expired and mine was different anyway, soooo I asked for level 2 support waited a few miinutes and the same guy comes back with "good news it appears that there is a fix for you, sorry for the misunderstanding and can I schedule an appointment for you?" I'm taking it in tomorrow morning.

My case # is 164385527 if anyone would like to reference it. So glad I found this thread. Hopefully the problem will actually get resolved!

    Hi everyone!
Sorry about my english, in first place.
My Imac (Intel CoreDuo, early 2006, 24") present same problems - vertical color lines, kernel panic and finally DEATH-. Just after reading Keith´s answer -thank you very much- I call Apple 902 and a very nice guy tell me, Apple extend warranty for vertical lines problem, but only in 17" machines! I can´t believe it!

I´m pretty desperate. Someone with 24" Imac could solve the problem calling Apple?

I live in Spain, the serial number of my Imac is W8642**GN

    Thank you!
