I'm having the exact same problem. Iris won't open unless I have done a recent (last 3 min or so) reset. Additionally, if the camera does come back, the image flickers laterally unless camera held perfectly still.
Camera is set up with software 3.1.2.
Not a single drop of water has gotten near this case and it has lived its entire 1 1/2 month life in an Otterbox defender case.
Come on APPLE!! I'm a brand new customer and I really wish I'd never left Sprint. This is the 3rd major function problem I've had in less that 2 months.
Come on over to Apple, they're software is super stable and never crashes...
Godd***.. i have now noticed this exact same issue on my 3GS bought on day 1 it was released..
took a couple of pics 2 days back and tried to email them - noticed that it was not in the photos app or elsewhere - and just assuming it was a glitch, forgot about it. but today, i started shooting more pics and realized that nothing was saving.. multiple resets later - no dice.. what the ****!!!!!
I also have recently bought iPhone 3Gs and only found out that the CAMERA is not functional.
I have tried with 4 different apps and all the possible methods to get my camera working
But I was not able to take ONE photo with camera.
Did not even get a chance have the camera apps loading to take the photo
As long as you didn't damage it, just bring it to the genius bar. They'll try a restore and realize it doesn't help, then you get a brand new one. The guy told me "The simplest way I can put it is that there was a hardware failure." Took all of 8 minutes to get my new one up and running with the latest update.
BINGO - HAVE FOUND A WAY A WAY OF FIXING CAMERA PROBLEM.
It is not a hardware issue, but a software issue.
Somewhere the camera the settings, have been messed up.
By re-setting from a back up, it only puts back the restored files etc, including the duff camera settings. Only by zeroing the iPhone will this work.
Hiya all, I recently sold my old iPhone 3G to a friend of mine, but I had the problem with the camera lens not opening, the camera application would still work, and sense the orientation of the phone. But it would let me take photos etc.
Before I passed the iPhone to my mate. I ZEROED the phone, by going into Settings/General/Reset, then select ERASE ALL CONTENT AND SETTINGS.
Make sure you have you iPhone plugged into your computer or mains adapter etc, because this could take up to 2 hours.
This resets all settings to their defaults and erases all your information and media:
And also brings the iPhone back to the state, of when you first purchased the iPhone.
I've only just spoke to my friend who has taken the iPhone from me, and reassures me the camera is now working.

Just doing a 'hard' reset doesnt remove the issue for everyone!
My 3GS was brand new and the camera didnt work out of the box (factory settings)with no data/apps or anything on other than what it comes with.
I didnt realize that the camera didnt work at first. Not expecting brand new iPhone to have a fault (first time iphone user, now much wiser ha)I thought I was doing something wrong at first?
I soon learned that it was a fault and as of yet Apple havent acknowledged it which is frustrating and whilst hard/soft restores/resets work for some, they are not absolute!
I did the hard reset (wiping every song/app/email/etc/etc I had synced) and still no joy.
Then out of nowhere some weeks later, it worked for 24 hours and now back to shutter freeze. Have done another hard reset BUT NO SUCCESS.
Same problem here. Phone opens with camera aperature closed and won't take picture or video. No problem heh, just take it to the Apple store which is over an hour away. Like I have nothing else to do other than replace my iPhone. Good waste of a day. Maybe Apple should just fix the problem before shipping millions of these broken phones! This is my 2nd iPhone 3GS in less than a month. The first one just locked up about every other day and the resolution to that was to bring it in to the Apple store. Gimme a break!! Not to mention the time to reconfigure the settings / notes (oh yeah, the notes don't sync on a PC either so those have to be manually re-added). Geez Apple, you've got some work to do!!! So Apple's aren't prone to viruses like PCs, but on the flipside, they just plain don't work either!!! At least my Windows PC still boots up okay and the applications open!
I just started having this issue after performing an update. The camera feature opens but the shutter stays closed. Also, everything is slow to react, the slider, the sleep, turning off and on. It is really unacceptable. I hate to have to go to the genius bar for it, but I've already searched for an answer with no luck. So, off I go tomorrow.
Hi all, I am writing from Switzerland and having the same problem. Camera + Video Camera not working at all. Once I click in the icon and load the application to find out the "closed lens" all time. No chance to make it work. On the other hand, I realized that if I go back to principal menu (click home button) the iPhone consumes more battery as it is leaving the application running in the background (like having the camera on all time). Sometimes the iPhone freezes and I have to reset several times in order to finish the application (high consumption of battery) and iPhone getting really HOT. Hope that this is going to be fix very soon. Problem started at least 1 month ago. Please Apple fix is needed very soon!!!
