Yes, it will show you the connection, but the juice needed to charge is not there...iPad needs a full 10Watts to offer best results...USB ports, even powered ones do not have that much to offer...

I would like to buy an extra AC charger. The official Apple one is a little on the expensive side. Can anyone recommend an alternative?

Honestly I doubt any 3rd party store has received any 3rd party accessories yet...to soon...the iPad charge is a different wattage than iPod or iPhone...and 3rd party accessory companies would have NOT known this ahead of time... it will be a little while before anyone but Apple carries it...

In my experience, even though the iPad reports "Not Charging", it will charge from a computer USB port (including a hub port) when it's turned off — but rather slowly. Mine went from 79% to 100% this way in about 3 hours.

Has anyone tried using one of the charging pads (I believe it's called Powermat) yet? Supposedly they charge your cell phones wirelessly by just placing your phone on the pad. I was curious as to whether anyone has tried charging their iPad on one.

I went to the PowerMat site. There is no mention of the iPad. I doubt that a iPhone or iPod mat thingy would satisfactorily charge an iPad because of the higher charging rate ned by the iPad compared to an iPhone or iPod.

It can take longer than 5 hours. Make sure you're using the 10W power adapter that came with the iPad.
