So guys, here's the deal. First of all, we all have the one and right point: it's all because of the earphones. I think that Apple crapped with the set of earphones that come with the device when you first purchase your iPhone. I bought an extra pair of earphones which were being sold separately in their own box. The problem was over. The earphones that come with the iPhone are of "B grade" quality. After I bought the set everything went back to normal. The default set was permanently damaged as the mic wasn't working as well as the voice controllers.

I have a normal iphone 3G & it happens on that (no voice activated stuff on this one) using the bundled headphones (with mic) it does not happen, but try any other 3.5 headphones or jack (even iphone compatible ones) it plays random music fast forwarding & has to be rebooted using the power button.
I believe its a mixture of poor build quality in the 3.5 jack & the headphones sockets themselves (if the bundled ones work, theres something different between that & every other one I have tried & were talking over 10 now)

but as apple wont help anyone with the problem, even if you report it under their feedback page, I guess they dont care....

maybe its a ploy to get us to buy only their own headphones?

right, i went & bought some apple official earphones with remote & mic - mb770g/a
now on the box it says remote & mic only supported by iphone 3gs (when it comes to the iphone) & audio supported by all iphone/ipod models.
I have a iphone 3g, so was aprehensive, but the remote works , even with a iphone 3g (well the stop/start button works & the fast forward works - the volume controls dont) but get this, the start/stop/fast forward work in EXACTLY the same way as the problem.
this to me means compatability for this was included in a firmware upgrade for iphone 3G (as well as 3GS) but 3rd party support for headphones has not been considered - so most iphone compatible headsets are no longer compatible.

no wonder apple do not want to discuss this.

im presuming either you buy some apple headphones, risk 2 party ones (make sure you can return them) or roll back the firmware to one where the compatibility for these headphones was not included (im not sure if you can do this or what version it was)

Apple is acknowledging that there is an issue with the remote headphones. All headphones of this type are eligible for replacement. http://www.apple.com/support/headphones/replacementprogram/

I just got my 3gs headphones replaced at the Apple store in about 5 min. Tried them out with a long workout and they worked perfectly.

And here we are in April of 2010. I've had the iPhone since it debuted a few years back. I'm currently on my FIFTH phone, this time the 3GS and YES, I STILL HAVE THIS PROBLEM. In fact, every phone has had this problem! It's been replace three times due to the pause, start, fast forward etc. Now with the 3GS, I have that problem AND the goofy Voice Control, which keeps coming on and off. I also can't get the friggin iTunes to stop playing sometimes! It just keeps on trying to take over when I'm listening to internet tunes like Radio Paradise. So this problem has been around since the iPhone was released and they just can't seem to fix it. I suspect we'll just have to live with it, because our pals at Apple have been awfully busy with other things, like making an iPad.

Actually, I'm going to try and put a piece of tape over the headphone remote and see if that fixes the problem. I know for a fact that I don't sweat all over the thing. And how would that explain 5 phones with the same issue? Good luck eveyone!

Having same problem with the voice control interrupting my music when running, it gets quite frustrating but I think maybe i'll use earphones from my old ipod video to see if it stops the interruption, pity though cause I enjoyed have the controls on the earphones as opposed to going through phone to change volume etc.

if it doesnt work apple would need to SORT IT OUT!!

Well, I've signed up as it seems I am having exactly the same problem as everyone else.

Initially I thought it was my headphones, but I just bought a new set of Skullcandy Titan earphones and have the same problem...
I have now tried this with official apple 3g headphones, Radius Headphones and a brand new set of skullcandies...

The problem is that the mic button does not work correctly. It doesnt do anything half the time, and the other half it launches voice control... the single click/double click/triple click functions don't work (or work very intermittently...

It is VERY frustrating, especially since I bought some new headphones to resolve this!! Has nobody found a solution!?

This will be my first complaint of my Iphone3GS now OS4, and the voice control feature. I can use the ipod function of my phone for about 39 minutes before the Voice Control feature kicks in, rendering my music function useless. Apple, please take this seriously and do something about it.

My brand spankin' new Iphone 4 has this exact issue. Unbelievably frustrating. I just got back from the gym where I had got the Voice control followed by the fast forward skipping of the audiobook atleast 7 times.
    Suck it Apple!

I have the same problem with my 32GB 3Gs. After about 30 minutes of music or video it will start randomly activating voice control. Seems to have started since updating to IOS 4.0 (8A293).

    @maxmouse

i agree 100%... this only happens to me at the gym oddly enough and just started with the new update. i was working out in the gym for weeks before the update and this never happened... this problem started up for me immediately after i updated to IOS4... i was having problems with my 3gs 16g with the phone part so with 34 days left on my extended warranty apple exchanged it out for a brand new phone. i have never dropped or even so much as bumped this new 3gs 16g and i had it for 2 or three weeks before the new update. i was working out in the gym with no problems during that time...
