I just got a hand-me down about 4 yr old macbook pro. The wi-fi pick-up is very weak --I lose it on the laptop when I move only about maybe 20 feet away from the router. I know the problem is the computer and not the router/airport, because the wi-fi is picked up well (where this one doesn't) with 2 other mac laptops. Thoughts?

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

That sounds excessively bad. If you are looking for cheap/free things to try, I would check/reseat the antenna cable connectors at the Airport card. However, it looks difficult, as the top of the MBP has to come off. You probably have a very early MBP, maybe like this:

I have a different model, so I may be wrong. Not sure if I recall OS10.6 also causing wifi problems or not, as I'm on 10.5.

Mine is having similar issues. Signal strength is horrible compared to other laptops (PC or Mac) on same network. I'm using latest OSX.

Anyone have any ideas for improving reception, even temporarily when in problem areas, such as something I can attach to my MBP?

Same issue here. Booted into 10.4.8 everything is "fine". Never opened this computer nyself and there is a noticeable difference between 4.8, 5.7 and 6.3.

I spoke with a repair service, and they recommended that I bypass the whole issue and buy a small stick/receptor that goes into a USB port (not sold by or connected in any way to the repair service, but it would be far cheaper and the receptor is supposedly vastly superior.) He said it works great and it only costs $20, so I'm going to give it a try and I'll report back. Thanks for your help.

IT WORKED!!!!! i was able to fix my problem. Was reading the iphone 4 teardown on ifixit, and they mentioned that the wifi antenna is at the top right after you take the back cover off. Also was reading on another forum somewhere that mentioned one of the screws were loose and this was the cause of their wifi problem. So from there went to radio shack, bought a set of phillips #00 and #0 screw drivers, following the teardowns on these pages,http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-iPhone-4-Wi-Fi-Antenna/6846/2#s29019, (which both made it sound simple), took the back plate off and tightened the top screw on the wifi antenna (it was really loose in my case) and presto, wifi is working perfectly again. Went to my same back room and i'm getting 4000kbs download speeds again over wifi (where it completely disconnected before). Took almost 6 months but i'm really happy i solved my problem. Hope others can too.

I'd recommend getting a usb wifi signal extender if the problem persist.
