Got my Canon MP490 to use with Snow Leopard after reading that it would work with it. Set it up,
got an error message so called Canon, downloaded all drivers, software. Tried to print, no go.
Keeps saying "preparing".

Any suggestions on what I can do now??

Try running a reset printing system.

*How to Reset the Printing System*

    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
    2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
    3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse (or right click if supported).
    4. Click "Reset printing system ..."
    5. Restart your Mac

This will remove your printer queues but not your printers drivers. So you will need to add your printer queue again by opening Print & Fax, clicking + and selecting the MP490 in the list.

Are you using a different USB cable to what you were using with HP? Maybe this was causing your issue previously?

If you do have a new USB cable, then are you connecting the cable directly from the MP490 to the Mac? The Canon's don't work that well when there is a USB hub sitting between itself and the Mac.

The MP490 does not have built-in wireless. It only has a USB port. You could connect the MP490 to the Airport Extreme via USB cable, but if the USB cable is not working correctly then it will cause errors also. Still, it would be worth trying.

With the printer connected via USB to the Airport Extreme, you will have to add the printer queue again, still selecting the Default view. However, if all is okay with the connection, the printer will appear with its Kind column showing Bonjour, instead of USB which displays for a direct connection to the Mac. Select this 'Bonjour' MP490 and ensure the Print Using shows MP490 series before clicking Add.

Once the new queue has been created, select it and then click Options & Supplies. Under the General tab, ensure your driver version is 10.30.3.0. If the driver is not showing this version, download the Canon v2.3 Driver Update from Apple and install this before continuing with testing the printer.

Thanks for the info. It confirms that the latest driver is being used and the connection is direct to the Mac.

Are you able to scan from the MP490 to your Mac? If you cannot, then I suggest you buy a new USB cable and try connecting that between the Mac and the MP490.
