Q: MacBook Battery Won't Charge...Get "Not Charging"

Hi all...did an SMC Reset...didn't work...reseated the batter, etc. When I plug in the mag, it is constantly green but the laptop cannot run without power cable and I get the "Not Charging" near the top.

Anyone have new info on this...frustrated...battery is just over a year old.

I was just having this problem. Intel MBP, just over 4 years old. Replaced the battery 3 months ago. A few days ago I noticed that the battery was at 55% (I usually keep it plugged in) and was not charging. Resetting the SMC didn't work. I figured the problem wasn't the battery because my battery is new.

Turns out the problem was my magsafe adapter. I had a second one at home, and the replacement power adapter is charging the battery just fine.

The model that did not work is A1172. The model that does work is A1222. No idea if that's significant or how old the respective adapters are. (I've had a string of MacBook Pros over the past few years -- 1 personal, 2 work, and not sure which adapter is from which computer.)

I realize that you posted this over a year ago, but I had a similar profile on my macbook, Approximately 191 cycles on mine. Left it off for a week (maybe two) and then all of a sudden, no charge possible.

Read up on the problem and was ready to buy a new battery but decided to go to the Apple store (I have one locally) to make sure that the battery was the problem. The genius bar tech confirmed that it was the battery. He talked to a coworker who said because of the age it was probably long periods of non-use that caused the problem so he would not offer a replacement--and I expected to pay anyway. But the tech was not satisfied to let it there, so he bumped to the manager who approved a replacement.

I have Apple at home and run a small Windows-based community center lab network at work, and all I can say is YAY APPLE!

i am also getting the same problem.

i left my macbook for repair in an authorized service provider and it returned to me with the battery dead. and worst part is they cant explain it. they just tell me "it just died."

I have the same trouble, computer says it's not charging so I have to stay connected at all times. Irritating. Bought this June of 2008 but I don't use it a lot. Apple needs to address this, there are too many of us for this not to be their problem.

Went on vacation for 12 days, same thing happened. Before the battery was great (about 4 hours working with comp).

I did an SMC reset with no luck, then I purchased a new battery and i'm getting the same results. I did another SMC reset and put the new battery in and still nothing.

    Anyone get this issue sorted?

I have the same problem. Left the macbook fall asleep and it never woke-up!

    Révision du matériel : 0300
    Révision de pile : 0100
    Informations sur la charge :

    Charge complète : Non

    Conditions : Vérifiez la batterie.
    Batterie installée : Oui
Intensité de courant (mA) : 42
    Tension (mV) : 4063

According to what I've read from all the post, I have a doubt about the fact that the battery itself is the problem. I have a feeling that the "charger" (somewhere inside the motherboard) is the real problem. Don't get confuse with the power supply "magsafe" (wich is just a transformer) that supply DC current to the computer.

If someone has great technical expertise in macbook would like to hear about it.

I am having a similar problem. I booted up my MacBook on battery power and set it to download the iTunes update. When I came back the screen was black and the computer would not turn on. I was finally able to restart my MacBook with it plugged in. Until today, I have had no battery problems. My battery lasts a good 4 hours and has shown no reduction in charge.

My information fits within the guidelines for the Battery Updater 1.4. However, when I tried to install I am told, "This update requires Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 or newer or Mac OS X Leopard version 10.5.6 or newer." I have Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.3. Is there a fix for this? Below is my battery information.

Add me to the list of users having the 'Not Charging" issue on a 13" MacBook. I went to open the lid and nothing, so I plugged in the charger and the light was green but as soon as it was unplugged the MacBook died. I reset the SMC and PRAM, but nothing. As of 2 days ago my battery would last 3+ hours, now nothing. There are too many people having this issue suddenly.

I am not very happy with this situation. It seems to be fairly common. My battery went from working perfectly to not working at all. It only had 212 cycles on it. This is short of the 300 cycles that would show reduced charging and very short of the 750 cycles total life. This is the sort of problem that I paid the premium over a PC for a Mac to avoid.

If your battery has failed with only ~200 cycles and you are still covered by AppleCare, contact them and ask for a replacement.

If you can make an appointment with your local Genius Bar, you may still be able to talk your way into a replacement, especially if your 1-year warranty is only very recently expired. Otherwise, you will need to pay the $120 or so for a replacement battery.
