As for Compilations, the Touch and iPhone do not have a feature that removes artists from the Artist menu if they only exist on a Compilation album. That is a significant short-coming that Apple refuses to address for some reason. There is a Compilation category, but that only serves as a shortcut to your Compilation albums.
I think what you want is to remove one-hit wonders from the Artist menu, but there's currently no way to do that on the Touch.Windows XP Pro, "Cogito, ergo iPod." (I Think, Therefore iPod)

Either solution would work for me (display album artist where one exists when viewing artist list - Sonos does this off the iTunes library, or suppress compilation-only artists entirely when browsing the artist list).
It's just unbelievable to me that they won't address it, especially since it's been an issue for so long. I could only guess that not enough people went to Apple officially to complain so here I am - hoping they read these forums.
PS: any other creative ideas out there? (I don't know how to write scripts to batch edit these things but would love an example to play with... maybe I could use that to save composer to some usused field for later and then set composer = album artist for all songs. It's daunting to do it all manually by album.)HP, Windows Vista
Currently Being ModeratedApr 1, 2010 11:16 AM (in response to jdog99)I have a 5th gen ipod and have been patiently waiting for a similar feature. However, the good news is they finally heard all the cries for help and implemented it on the column browser on the new version of itunes (9.1). You can choose to "use album artists" when displaying artists in the column browser. However, if you previously had these albums listed as a compilation, you have to change that, or they will still be grouped with compilations (unless you don't have any real compilations, in which case you can just turn that feature off). ANyway, here's hoping they implement it in ipod/itouch updates as well. You CAN leave feedback for apple here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ I did so for itunes and the big apple in the sky heard!macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

Currently Being ModeratedJun 21, 2010 1:54 PM (in response to jdog99)I have noticed strange behaviour in album mode.
I have a few albums with the title Greatest Hits. But they are by different artists.
For example I have an album of James Taylor's Greatest Hits
When I push the 'Music' button, then go to, 'Albums', then select James Taylor's Greatest Hits, ( it could be any Greatest Hits album ), I see a list of all the songs within the album.
If I now turn the iPod Touch horizontal and scroll to the James Taylor album on cover-flow, when I click on this album, I see songs from all the other albums with the 'Greatest Hits' title, although they are by different artists.
Can remember seeing this before the iOS 4 upgrade?iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06Ghz, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPod Touch 2nd Gen - iOS 4
