I just got my new ipod touch 64g - a huge leap from my old dinosaur ipod and it's awesome & beautiful. But - I am stunned to find that I can't "use album artist" when viewing the artist list. My Sonos player can do it... why can't ipod? Or at the very least give me the option to exclude compilations from the artist list (like itunes can "group compilations when browsing")? I don't want to view the "album" list - I want to sort by artist. Uing the "sort artist" field is not the answer - it just changes the location in the list but still shows the same name. I could copy all my artists/album artists to "composer" and use that list but would take foerever. There are forums all over the internet for years on this - Apple how could you possibly keep ignoring it? Thanks - I hope you can help because this is really making me crazy.

It's not entirely clear what you're asking for, do you want the Artist menu to display the Album Artist field instead of Artist? That's not possible on iPods.

As for Compilations, the Touch and iPhone do not have a feature that removes artists from the Artist menu if they only exist on a Compilation album. That is a significant short-coming that Apple refuses to address for some reason. There is a Compilation category, but that only serves as a shortcut to your Compilation albums.

I think what you want is to remove one-hit wonders from the Artist menu, but there's currently no way to do that on the Touch.

I have a 5th gen ipod and have been patiently waiting for a similar feature. However, the good news is they finally heard all the cries for help and implemented it on the column browser on the new version of itunes (9.1). You can choose to "use album artists" when displaying artists in the column browser. However, if you previously had these albums listed as a compilation, you have to change that, or they will still be grouped with compilations (unless you don't have any real compilations, in which case you can just turn that feature off). ANyway, here's hoping they implement it in ipod/itouch updates as well. You CAN leave feedback for apple here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ I did so for itunes and the big apple in the sky heard!

Just downloaded iOS 4 and Apple STILL has not provided a fix for this. Count my stupefied and frustrated -- this has been raised for years.

I have noticed strange behaviour in album mode.
I have a few albums with the title Greatest Hits. But they are by different artists.
For example I have an album of James Taylor's Greatest Hits
When I push the 'Music' button, then go to, 'Albums', then select James Taylor's Greatest Hits, ( it could be any Greatest Hits album ), I see a list of all the songs within the album.
If I now turn the iPod Touch horizontal and scroll to the James Taylor album on cover-flow, when I click on this album, I see songs from all the other albums with the 'Greatest Hits' title, although they are by different artists.
Can remember seeing this before the iOS 4 upgrade?
