A machine that has previously had no problems seeing the iPhone is suddenly unable to see it. There had been no new software installed between operational and non-operational. When it gets plugged in, it makes the connection noise and opens iTunes but nothing shows up for a device. Upon connection, it used to pop up the AutoRun request regarding the camera but doesn't do that anymore, either.

It does not show up in My Computer or in the Scanners & Cameras window. It DOES show up in the Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers as "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver"

MACHINE DATA:

GA-X58-UDP4 Gigabyte MB
Core I7-920
4gb RAM
WinXP SP3 (all the latest updates)
Norton 360v3 (turned off for these tests)
All ports are USB2.0

The iPhone is not and has not been jailbroken.

I am a computer engineer by trade, so I have tried to troubleshoot this...steps taken so far:

Ran a full virus scan in safe mode

Ran a full spyware scan in safe mode

Verified current versions on all software

Stopped/restarted each of the services
=> no change

Cleaned out the USB connectors with air
=> no change

Tried different USB connectors
=> no change

Removed all USB connections other than mouse/kb
=> no change

I have verified/updated USB drivers on the machine
=> says it updates them...no change

Tried to connect with iTunes with another computer user on this PC
=> no change

Created a new computer user on this PC and tried to connect
=> no change

I have verified/updated drivers on the iPhone
=> says it updates them...no change

I have removed all Apple programs as directed in KB article here and then re-installed
=> done five times now:
===> as directed, no extras.
===> with using a registry cleaner to get rid of the install remnants.
===> cleaning up the registry by hand.
===> cleaning up the registry and all other apple related files on the system by hand.
===> using the MS Cleanup Utility recommended in a KB article here.

Ran connectivity tests under Help>Diagnostics
=> has a red or sometimes an orange ball beside "No iPhone or iPod found" and fails.

Ran sync tests under Help>Diagnostics
=> has a red or sometimes an orange ball beside "No iPhone or iPod found" and fails.

I have tried to reboot the computer
=> no change

I have tried to reboot the device
=> no change

I have tried another cable
=> doesn't work

I have tried another iPod on my PC
=> works fine, recognized immediately with both cables

I have tried to restore the device
=> goes through the process until the point where the iPhone is supposed to reboot and then comes back with the same image of a USB cable pointing to iTunes.

I have tried the iPhone on another machine (older laptop with same operating system)
=> works fine and restores fine...still not seen on this PC after the restore.

*OTHER NOTES*
The other cable worked the first time it plugged in, seeing the recently restored iPhone (thanks to the wife's laptop) but then wouldn't show up in iTunes again with either cable.

When I remove the Apple Mobile Device Support program, my iPhone shows back up in both the My Computer and the Scanners & Cameras windows but iTunes won't function.

iTunes takes about 60 seconds to respond after being opened with the iPhone connected or plugging in the iPhone. Any other windows opened or moved over it remain in the window image until it catches up. Remove the iPhone during that time and the program pops back to life immediately. iTunes opens immediately if the iPhone is not plugged in.

Any ideas?

    I think there might be something that's gone wrong with the recent iTunes update, because I'm having this problem too, and I've seen another couple people posting about it as well.

    The only "fix" that has worked was to completely delete iTunes and reinstall it. Then the iPhone was recognized... once. (Good enough to do a backup at least!) Next time, nothing.

    Thank goodness iPhones are pretty autonomous... this is seriously annoying!

    I found that loading an older version of iTunes worked, but only for a little while. I loaded it later the day of my first post on this thread and it worked fine for a bit, then intermittently, requiring a reboot or update or the driver and, as of today, none of those things will make it see the iPhone again.

    Sigh...

    I have not gotten iTunes to recognize my iPhone for the past month, even after going through pages and pages of fixes from support, and after talking with a tech. I'm unable to sync. It worked fine six weeks ago, but 9.1.1.12 is not working for me at all; rolling back to a previous iTunes version helped me get one backup, and now nada (again). I'd appreciate knowing if you get this fixed for yourself, and if so, how you did it.

    A couple days after I initially posted I checked for Software Updates and there was one addressing this issue. It fixed the problem for me.

    I was half way through updating my software on iphone as requested when I connected for the first time in a while and therefore had already done the itunes udate) when it asked to be connected to itunes (it was) and now is not recognised as a device on my computer at all....nor is it turning on/doing anything. My phone is literally dead except the screen that says connect to itues.

    ANY IDEAS would be most helpful?????????
