It is not the wireless connection. That is a red herring. I have been having this issue with all sorts of video when streaming like the rest of you, but I am also having it with content resident on the iPad. For example after about five painfully long slow resets while trying to watch Steve's iPhone 4 keynote, I gave up and down loaded the huge QuickTime file from iTunes (way better video quality, by the way - totally worth it to download) and it still froze any time I tried to scrub forward to where I was or when I accidentally rotated to portrait. Same issue with rental movies downloaded from iTunes. And for what it is worth, with most of my crashes somewhere on the screen there is a cluster of pixels that blink and stutter in the wrong color relative to their background until I reset.

I've had my iPad 3G since the day it launched, and have used the video capabilities regularly, but not too heavily. It was not until the last week or so that I have encountered an issue with the freezing. It freezes when streaming .h264 or HTML5, and when natively playing video podcasts, movies, and TV shows... Not sure what the deal is...I have to hard reset to get out and get the iPad running again...tomorrow I am trying to restore it as a new device... Not looking forward to filling it up again...

Don't bother restoring your iPad. The video freeze which requires a hard reset to unlock is due to a hardware problem. This can only be fixed by replacing your iPad.

Yes, it is not due to the wireless connection. Video freezes requiring a hard reset are due to a hardware problem in some iPads. The fix is to get the iPad replaced. Talk to Apple support or visit an Apple store.

How could I solve this issue? Mine was brought from a Best buy in Houston by a friend, and I'm in China, nowhere to replace. If this is a hardware issue, how to make sure the new one is working fine? A bug should have exactly description and cause. The apple's engineers don't care these?

For those who've replaced their ipads, do the replacement units still exhibit the same lock up issue?

I just got a replacement. It is the original type and not from the brown boxes. It works fine but has the wifi N issue that must be resolved by using different wifi names. Tested both with ABC player and AirVideo.

I tried some heavy netflix streaming today, as well as several videos within the videos.app, and had no issues. Mine was replaced yesterday, but i'll be going out of town next week and will be using the video heavily while i'm traveling, so I should see a definite answer then, but for now, it looks to be fixed...

Same problem - freezing video via AirVideo, Safari or even the regular player. Freezes about once per 30 mins on average. Got it from the UK (I'm in the Netherlands), but going back to the UK on holiday soon. Will visit an apple store there to see if this can be resolved. It seems this problem is widespread enough to me that Apple should have released a statement.

Here's how it happened for me:

    1) ABC Player freezes - waited for app to be updated - still freezes.
    2) Noted in forum that others had the same issue with ABC Player and had their iPads replaced. Called support - they said "no, it's a 3rd party app issue" - seemed reasonable to me.
    3) Read in forum that YouTube - not a third party app - also freezes. Mine freezes too!
    4) Went to store - they said, "probably your wifi - change security from WEP to WPA2". Sounded reasonable, made the change - still freezes.
    5) Read in forum that even downloaded podcasts freeze - mine freezes too! - can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 20 minutes, but eventually freezes.
    6) That's pretty much the last straw for me - all video formats, streaming and non-streaming, are freezing!
    7) Went back to the store, to either get a replacement or my money back. Was given one of those iPads from a brown box - since then, no more freezing, including ABC Player!

The iPad is such a great product - possibly even magical and revolutionary, but this was a very frustrating - and time consuming - experience. I was skeptical about the brown box replacements that I had read about online.

Your problem may not be the same as mine. If I were to go through the whole troubleshooting routine again, I would have started by testing the video podcast, which eliminates both a third party app issue and wifi as potential souces of the problem.

Same issue here as well...64gb 3g. This is my second Ipad that locks when playing video from numerous sources...even locally.

Tried watching vids on my girl's iPad and the video will either freeze completely, freeze with the audio still playing, or play but the audio will be muted. This is pretty annoying

I made a genius appointment in the uk in order to attempt to resolve the issue and get a replacement as it's almost certainly a hardware defect. Unfortuantley, I was unable to reproduce the issue at the genius bar after playing a video for 5 mins, so the only thing the genius could do was create a case file and I was told to return to the store if it did not get any better As I know it isn't gonna fix itself, has anyone found a certain application or video which will always produce the problem not long after starting so I can show the genius bar?

I made an appt and about 2 hours before I was scheduled to go in, I played video until mine LOCKED Up and took it in to the apt in a FROZEN state. Then showed it to the guy and after answering a few quetsions I got a new one out of a normal white box, not from a brown one others have refered to.

Try that, make an appt and freeze it before you walk in the door.
