Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

    Hi,
my iPod classic 30 GB 5th generation hanged about 3 weeks ago. The Apple Service changed the hard disk and told me it was OK. After connecting the iPod to my Compaq laptop it hanged again. It appears the USB port is disconnected after downloading some playlists on the iPod and this leaves the iPod in an unknown state that can be solved only setting the iPod in disk service mode and reinitializing it.
After some study I understood the responsible was version 9.1.X of iTunes. In fact I found a version 9.0.2.25 on the internet, re-installed this older version (of course the playlists were lost) and now my iPod is working correctly. Please note that version 9.1.1 installed on another PC is not causing any problem to my iPod Classic. Therefore the problem is probably due to a mixture between iTunes version 9.1.1 and the hardware of the PC.

Updated to Itunes 9.1.1 on Mac. Synced with 160gb 7th Gen ipod classic, i have the reboot loop and it won't restore. I just bought this **** ipod!

Guess what else. Im deployed in Afghanistan. Talk about Irony. Apple, do not ignore this huge forum topic, at least a response in "Im on it, give me time" would satisfy me.

It's not like I can go to the apple store to return it, ill have to wait till I get back. When I do take it back, i'll bring my mac and we can sync the new one there.

After months of attempting to fix my iPod class, I have failed to be successful. Although my iPod does work for a short period of time after I try to restore it with iTunes 8. It is now, as someone said, only useful as a paperweight.

I will continue to try anything possible, and hopefully someone will be able to find a solution. I will also try to stop by the Apple store later on this week to see if they have anything useful to say that we haven't already heard.

I installed iTunes 9.1.12 and my iPod promptly crashed. It showed that the memory capacity was almost full, but I had no music. Needless to say, I was furious. Had I been the reason for the device failing I would have accepted responsibility (hint hint Apple), but this was an Apple program update which caused the malfunction.

I read through some of the posts here and followed the advice posted by other users. I went to www.oldapps.com and downloaded iTunes 8.2. Then I unistalled the current iTunes program. I installed 8.2 and plugged in my iPod. The program recognized the iPod but said it had to be restored. Restored the iPod and it is now accepting music. Although, since my last library was save on 9.1, the 8.2 progam doesn't recognize the library. So, I have to upload everything into iTunes again.

I'm living in a country outside of the US and it would have been difficult getting my iPod serviced. Although I have to install all of my music onto the library and my device, I guess it's better than paying a whole lotta cash to replace the device. I hope this helps some of you.

And I agree with many of the posters, Apple has done way too little (if anything at all) in acknowledging and alleviating this problem.

As a student who has very little money this is very frustrating. Ive been having the same problems as everyone else, and the lack of responiveness by apple about this issue is appalling, and down right wrong.

There is a bright side. I figured out that when i manually add music and podcasts to the ipod, it stops syncing at around 2.6 gb. So in return I only go up to about 2.35 gb. I'm a podcast junkie so i use it to listen to podcasts with room for about 2 gb for music. Its sad I can only use, not even 2.5gb out of 120gb available. I will never by another apple product again.

Add me to the list of unhappy Apple customers. I have experienced the same problems described on this ever growing thread since I downloaded the lastest ITunes version. I have a 2 year old 80G Classic that has hardly been used and very well cared for. I saw all these postings and have tried all the fixes to no avail. Finally made an appt with the so-called Genius Bar this past weekend. Guess what? My hard drive is shot and they could offer me a 10% discount on an ITouch. He said that if I wanted to repair it I could Google to see if I could get it done cheaper elsewhere. What a slap in the face. I have filled out a survey that they send to your email and requested a call back. I not only have issues with the device but their "geniuses" as well. Will see if they call and what kind of response I get. I am not counting on anything but really felt the need to vent about this. I will not be buying Apple again!

Did you try to format the harddrive? From within windows, as if it were a plain external drive, without iTunes running? Then plug back in? iTunes should restore the iPod to a then normal state. At least, that worked for me.

Add me to the list too. My husband has a Ipod Classic 80GB we bought in Febuary 2008 worked until Itunes updated to version 9. I connected it to the computer to sync his podcasts and my computer wouldn't recongize that his Ipod Classic was connected to the computer or itunes. So I reset the ipod using the center and menu button. Connected his ipod. Itunes gave me the message saying ipod is corrupt. restore your ipod.So I click resotre. Itunes needs to prepare your ipod for recovery. Please leave your ipod connected." So I click continue. A window pops up that says preparing ipod for recovery. His ipod screen turns grey with a white apple and then shows the end of the ipod plug with the message Use Itunes to Restore. It's an endless cycle that never restores his ipod. I have poured over the apple website trying all the suggested fixes and the ones on here too. It's now a paperweight on my desk. Like everyone else suffering through this bad economy we don't have the money to go out and buy a new one. I'm so dissappointed that a update that apple created and issued for it's software would turn my husbands working ipod classic into just a dead paperweight. I'm glad to see we are not alone in this problem.

Did you also try the suggestion to format the ipod as if it were just a plain external drive -from within windows?
Is is a process that has been described above. You have to be very patient because it takes al very, very, very long time (hours even before it seems to start)?

More bad news: I've put this off for months now and have been using my ipod touch, but recently i called apple to see if anyone has come up with a solution and decided to bite the dust and send the ipod in for repair. Apple's response?...

Our technicians have performed full diagnostic checks on your IPOD CLASSIC (120GB) and have been unable to reproduce the symptom(s) you reported when you requested the repair. As a result of our tests, we can confirm that your product meets Apple specifications for performance, usability, and functionality.

Looks like they are still not owning up to anything yet. I have not recieved the Ipod but if it still does not work, I will be livid.

    Hi everyone,
sorry it's been a while. I tried the latest update last night (iTunes 9.2) and still no joy. This is the fourth or fifth update since the problems began, surely it wouldn't take long to find out what is causing these problems?
Apple please take some acknowledgement of this.

I recently uninstalled the 9.0 version and installed the 8.2 for the itunes (thank god after reading) but I have a slight problem. The message that appears says "The ipod is synced with another itunes library". If I sync my ipod with the "allegedly" new itunes library, will it delete all of my playlists? I clearly do not want to erase my library since I have tons of hours creating my playlists and organizing them. Can anyone help me on this matter

    I appreciate it.
