So I started the process of updating my iPhone 3G from 3.1.3 to 4.0. I started by manually backing up my iPhone by right clicking on it in iTunes. After it was finished I let 4.0 download (used the download only option). I then installed it and all was well until the process went to restore my data.

Itunes said the restore was interrupted and gave me three options, I picked "Continue restore". A few moments later a messaged popped up saying error -34 occurred and went on to say my iphone could not be synced because it couldn't find a file.

I have tried restoring it three separate times now and it just won't do it, same exact messages appear. Now itunes thinks this is a different iPhone so it wants to start a new if I go to sync it. Also the phone still has all my stuff on it like contact, texts, photos, notes, etc. The only things missing are things like my music (none on there now), custom ringtones, photos I've uploaded from itunes.

I'm not sure what my next move should be, the phone is at least usable for now.

Mine is now trying to force a system reset, but then says 'an error has occured, please try later'

Does this mean i now can't even use my iphone on the old settings? When i turn it on it just asks me to plug in (like when it's new!)

I have the same problem. I did manage to use my iPhone and put my apps in folders but none of them open now.

iTunes keeps trying to restore and I get the -34 error code.

Thanks Apple now my iPhone is useless.

    Anyone got any suggestions?

Tried restoring again, and got the Cancel, Continue, Delete choice. I hit cancel, and next thing it started to sync....Might be worth a try if you're having the same problem

iPhone 3G here with 5gigbytes out of 8gigabytes of storage used on device. Back up phase took about 2 hours, was stuck at 15%, then straight to complete. So the status bar during back up is not correct.

    Didn't work for me.

I'm more concerned about my app data being erased if the restore is corrupted. I'm gonna revert the firmware back to 3.1.3 and use an older backup.

I've tried for the past three hours. Twice it's crashed half way through with a "network connection error - 3253". Suggests I try later.

I'll give up for now and try leave it on overnight, but after Snow Leopard and Safari I'm not confident about upgrading at all. Apple used to be rock solid reliable - now they appear to rush things out.

I'm worst. My backup is taking forever! Its been an hour and counting. Hopefully restoring doesn't give me this same problem.

I noticed the same problem, I got partially through the update and got error-3253 the only way this could happen is if their was a lapse in my internet connection. Only problem with that is I have a very strong reliable connection. Oh well guess I will have to wait a while
