After I updated to iOS 4.0, my iPod Touch 2G could go into airplane mode. Should it be able to? Didn't think it would be necessary, so I think it's only a bug.

AFAICT, it only disables wifi (and maybe bluetooth -haven't checked that).

I guess your iPod is always sending out signals etc. looking for wifi, bluetooth and whatnot so this stops that happening.

I just tested this and I can connect to wifi networks and browse the web using my Touch whilst Airplane Mode is on, so I have no idea what it's for!

Mine does that too. But if you go back into the wifi menu, you can turn wifi back on. This results in the little airplane and wifi icons being displayed at the same time and allows you to browse the net etc.

I guess they just forgot to grey-out the wifi menu whilst Airplane mode was active?

The way I understood it, Airplane Mode disables your 3G/EDGE, Wi-Fi & Bluetooth, but then you can re-enable them if you need to. So when you get on a plane you kill everything, but then you can turn wi-fi back on if your pilot lets you know that your plane has wi-fi.

Sort of silly on the iPod Touch; rather than having to go into bluetooth and turning it off manually, you can hit airplane to kill both at once. Sort of nice for battery saving, actually.
