Q: After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

add me to the running list. i installed 9.2 last night. tried syncing 160gb classic today. verifying takes forever. once verifying is done my whole PC freezes until I end process. ipod works fine and didn't lose anything. uninstalled itunes and reinstalled. still nothing. this is crap. we need a fix now, apple!

EDIT: tried to manually sync and still messing up.

I too can be added to the list, basically the exact same issues everyone else is having. I just updated to 9.2 the other day and the moment I did my 120GB Classic is taking forever to restore then it freezes and won't do anything until I disconnect it and it basically starts over, freezes again etc.
I called Apple last night, they basically told me they had never heard of this issue, the lady looked up this discussion and read part of it. Then had me talk to her "supervisor" he wasn't a help what so ever all he tried to do was get me off the phone because it was his time to go home....he tried saying the discussion I spoke of must have been something different because he had never heard of this issue. It basically ended with him giving me a case number and telling me to call back tomorrow because he had to go home.
I will call them again tomorrow, I agree with everyone this is crap and they need a fix pronto!

I called Apple after my upgrade to 9.2 caused itunes to freeze up when connecting a ipod classic. Apple informed me to just wait! That after 10 minutes or so it would unfreeze and sync. So I did and then restored ipod classic and it worked. BS, but who am I to complain, my 25,000 songs where synced good to go. But APPLE FIX THIS PLEASE. Like everyone else is saying if you update software and then your ipod crashes and is not under warranty THATS BS. What would stop Apple from releasing software updates that crash old, outdated products forcing your hand to purchase a new one? And dont give me that stuff about Apple is the good guy! They had the F.B.I. raid that Gizmodo.com guys house.

So I went and tried what some people were suggesting, going to a computer that doesn't have Itunes and downloading the latest version of 8 and it would sync....no luck what so ever.
I'm calling Apple again today, there is no way they haven't heard of this issue like they told me 2 days ago when this thread has over 52k views!

Thanks for your suggestion. I tried that last week with my husbands Ipod classic. Unfortunately it didn't work. I did try your suggestion in case I did it wrong last week. Nope my computer still isn't recognizing that his ipod is connected to my computer to even be able to try and get it to format. When i put his ipod into disk mode the only option i have on the ipod screen is a black check mark and OK to disconnect. Sigh....

Same issue with iPod nano. Claimed to be corrupted, not able to restore.
    This fix worked for me.
Luckily I hadn't upgraded iTunes on another computer. When I plugged in the 'corrupted' iPod into this version (9.1) the restore option worked (I ended up with a blank iPod and had to resync everything).
It also now seems to work properly on the upgraded iTunes (9.2) on the first computer.

I apparently have the same problem as everyone else. My iPod is one of my best teaching tools. Right now it is a paperweight after I foolishly updated to the latest version of iTunes. I'm watching my iPod try to sync over and over again. I get the apple logo, then wait and wait and boom, it disconnects itself. Is there any help for this?

Soooo... Itunes 9.2 is officially declared safe for the Ipod Classic? I'm not daring to upgrade until I hear from multiple people that it is.

Apple has no idea the meaning...

BK, I'd hold off on upgrading.

I updated today to 9.2, hoping they had finally fixed the problem for us iPod classic users. Nope. It's STILL messed up. I am so distraught I don't know what to do. I need my iPod for teaching my classes and I'm working on next semester's lesson plans now. I am so FRUSTRATED!

I sure do wish I had seen this thread first! My old iPod 40 classic has been flawless for many years, did do a battery upgrade with the pdasmart folks over in TX, increased my battery time remarkably and for a very reasonable cost!

So I upgraded to iTunes 9 when it first was offered, and of course, as noted many times above, had problems. Was told my hard drive was corrupted. Tried all the "fixes" listed by various folks above on my own before I saw this thread, but nothing worked! Finally send it back to PDAsmart and they put in a new hard drive for me. Just got it back and wow, it is "still corrupted" according to iTunes! Again tried everything, no dice!

So with nothing else to try, except get a message off to the techies at PDAsmart (just did that, no answer yet), I am at this moment upgrading to the iTunes 9.2, see if that helps, nothing else I can do at this point!

Will let you know what I find when anything new occurs....

NOPE, "UPGRADING" (Yeah, Right!) TO ITUNES 9.2 DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM!

Can I suggest that if we belong to any boards or forums that we post something directing people to this thread. We need to get the word out that anyone with a classic or even gen 5 iPod should NOT download the 9.2 itunes upgrade.

I just happened upon this thread because I just got an iPad and I thought I'd check out if there was anything new going on with the iPod. After seeing this thread I posted something the other day on a board I go to all the time. I really don't know how else to get the word out. I just don't understand why Apple isn't doing something. And, I can't really call them, because I didn't download it.....thank god.
