Hi all.I updated my 3GS last night to Iphone OS4 and this morning when i went to play music through my "made" for iphone/ipod Pioneer DEH200BT stereo it came up as format error -19.It wouldn't recognise the iPhone at all.At first I thought it could be that my usb cable might have got damaged but it wasn't.I did a simple iPhone reset through the settings menu and alls ok now.Everything seems to work fine again.

I came upon this forum after reading about the connection problems via USB on some car stereo systems after iOS 4 upgrades. As music lover this really *****. I have a JVC Stereo unit with front USB input which I had just purchased. Anyway, I downloaded iOS 4 but have not installed it on my iTouch (3rd Gen 32MB). I plan to install iOS 4 later today and bite the bullet and see what the H. Thanks for the info shared so far. I'll repost the results after the upgrade.

The method used to recognize the USB device has a clever bit of code in the firmware to improve the connect time once the initial handshake with the device has been established. So after the update to iOS4, the host device (Car Stereo) still thinks that it is connecting to the un-updated client device (iPhone prior to updating to iOS4) The updated client device (Your iPhone with iOS4), must fool the host device (Your car stereo), into believing that it is an entirely new device. This is done by connecting your iPhone to the stereo head USB port with the iPhone switched off completely. This is achieved by holding down the top power button on the iPhone until the red slide bar comes up and prompts you to shut the iPhone down. Do this and then with the car stereo switched on, plug the iPhone into the USB socket and wait till the iPhone starts of it's own accord. If it does not start, press the top power button on the phone until it starts. This will force the host device (Your car stereo) and the client device (Your iPhone) to re-negotiate the handshake between the devices and get you back to where you will once again be happy.

Now we can all stop beating up both the Car Stereo manufacturers and Apple and focus on being civil gentle folk that enjoy discussions about how clever we all are to be able to use amazing technology to get ourselves over-stressed and irritable.

I have an Alpine iDA-X001 car stereo for iPod
Since updating to iOS4 the iphone won't work with the unit.

What are the chances of Apple sorting this out?
I'll downgrade to iOS3 if I have to.
Can live without the multitasking and wallpapers will miss the folders
but will prefer to have the iphone work with my stereo again

    *The Fix!!*
If you don't want to do this simple way of fixing it you can also reset your settings under general.

Nope sorry your supposed fix doesn't work with Renault stereo systems. Tried what Alhedward said, and all sorts of combination's. Basic fact of the matter is, Apple has changed something in iOS4 that a lot of manufacturers are having problems with.

I have the isimple GateWay in my 06 VW, but it's never really worked correctly, and the 4.0 update broke it. Audiocenter, how did you get it to work on the isimple, I followed the above "tricks" with no luck. Thanks.

I have a Pioneer 5100ub one that is made for the iphone and I have been syncing problems for both my usb ports. It gives me a error message though it appears that my phone is attempting to sync. The ipod music listing is weird now as it doesnt show all the songs and only lists them under the albums view.

I installed iOS 4 on my iTouch earlier today. Went out for a cruise to the Post Office, plugged the iTouch USB into my JVC Car Stereo and... at first there was silence as the display read "Reading" and then, voila... soon I was jamming the new Deftones album. I can't say I did anything as just install the software. So far so good here. I hope all you all figure the problems out as I was dreading connection problems of my own. A hard reset of all settings would usually fix any connection problems I had with iOS 3x.

Hi - I was having the same issue today after upgrading to iOS 4 on my 3GS. I have a JVC in the car that I listen to my iPhone on every day. I tried the suggestion of resetting the settings in General and it worked!

Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings

Sure it rearranged all of my icons and put my wallpaper back to default, and I had to rediscover my wifi at home - but this is minor compared to not being able to listen to music via my iPhone in the car. Hope it works for you too....
