Same problem here: slow 3G. Restore to factory settings and "hard resets" doesn't improve speed. Especially the 'unlock-slider', sliding app pages and using Calender feel slow.

Irons you can try this "magical" process to get to 3.1.3 again, just takes a few steps to follow closely but yes you can.

    For both PC and MAC:
    http://lifehacker.com/5572003/how-to-downgrade-your-iphone-3g%5Bs%5D-from-ios-4- to-ios-313

I just downgraded my 3G from 4.0 to 3.1.3 and it works just as before. Familiar icons, speed is back. Just pay attention to all the steps as there are unique files for 3G versus the 3GS model, each of which are listed there.

Following upgrade to os 4 my iPhone 3G 8th was so slow I could hardly use it.

I tried a few things but the cure for me was a forced reboot.

This can be initiated by holding down the home button and power button for 5 to 10 seconds until the apple logo appears.

Now it runs better than before the upgrade.

Same problems with my 3G, I hope Apple will fix these problems fast because I'm scared that it can change my world if it starts to look like Microsoft.
I have IMacs in my studio, Macbooks at home, IPod touch IPhone and I was going to buy two IPads.
    Please fix it fast!

Another very disappointed upgrader as well. Apple... what's the deal? Did you even test this before shipping it? Maybe you just want us all to upgrade... this stinks!

It works!!! Do it twice! It is still al little bit slower than 313 but it is not noticeable.
    Thanks a lot

Sorry, I mean do the "hard reset" twice (push the two buttons together till it reboot).
    It works!

Thanks to all of the comments above I successfully aborted upgrading to new OS4.
I like Apple's products but I think they really should stop saving on RnD by making a big great advertising campaign thus luring masses of people into buying Apple's stuff so then afterwards Apple's engineers could sift through all the negative comments about issues and glitches with new products and start fixing them.
I've noticed it's not the first time that they've done it. Just remember the iPhone from the beginning. People would first get it and then share what was wrong with their devices and Apple would fix it along the way so to speak. Same sh... is happening wright now. I bet in a month or two Apple will come up with new "fixed" version of OS4 for all 3G and 3Gs users. Or perhaps they'll say "f...k it! let those idiots buy our new sh...!" We just gotta wait and see.

I updated to 4.0 two days ago, and was excited to find that the speed of negotiating the apps via touch screen, and even the return to the main screen via the Home button has increased appreciably. I also love the fact that the wallpaper is now visible behind the icons at all times.

HOWEVER, I am having a TERRIBLE time getting email, even when I am signed on and within inches of the main hub of a super fast WiFi connection. And when I'm on 3G -- forget it. I have swiftly stopped expecting to be able to get any email AT ALL -- certainly not in any timely fashion. The only thing that seems to retrieve new mail is to power the phone completely off, wait a few minutes and power back on.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas what to do about it? Any tips would be most appreciated. Thanks!

    to mxm168,
I spent 17 years working on windows software and then I moved to Mac, well what has happened on my IPhone 3G with IOS 4 was solved with a double "hard reset" nothing compared with hundreds of fatal errors, service packs, software crashes and ctrl-alt-del.
    Double reboot, "it simply works!"

Well, I did a couple of things and my iPhone is working well now. I will not say it is totally as fast as it used to be but it is DEFINITELY faster than it was directly after upgrading to iOS4. For me it is now zippy enough to use without getting frustrated by long waits...

I also did a factory restore:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2478473&tstart=0

    Then a hard reset:
    http://www.cultofmac.com/speed-up-iphone-3g-ios4-with-a-hard-reset/48070

But from what I have been reading in this discussion it seems like just the hard reset will do the job. If it doesn't, try the factory restore.

Here's the problem. Apple pushed out an over-hyped "Upgrade" which runs idle using 95% of the 3G's RAM. Gee, I wonder why the phones won't run -- anything.

Shame on you Apple. Shame on you. This is junk.

I think I may have spoken too soon, my phone is still sluggish at times, even apple programs, the IM, phone contacts, ipod buttons are slow to respond. I timed it and they are averaging 5-10 seconds to open where before the update they opened immediately.

Does anyone know if they are working on this or should I email support?

i called tech support since i still have some apple care warranty left on my iPhone 3G. the guy said that apple knew what was going on, and that they would have some sort of fix in the near future, some from of iOS4 that would fit better to iPhone 3G. i was about to ask why that wasn't just done from the beginning.....don't know why i didn't. he mentioned that he could tell me how to downgrade to OS3, like others have figured out in this forum, but he also acknowledged that these are not procedures endorsed by apple. anyway, that's what i got from apple tech support. i'm not sure i really care anymore since i have an iPhone 4 on the way. man, i've been brainwashed by apple...lol.

Well, right after installation of the iOS4 I have noticed that my iPhone 3G slowed down but I tried to make myself believe it is the way it should be. However when I tried to use Safari and iPod at the same time, that was the time when I actually got pain in the back.

Checked the forums and learned it is not just me, but in general iOS4 should have not been allowed for iPhone 3G as well as for the original iPhone, because out of all the perks promised iPhone 3G users get only:
    - several new wallpapers
    - folders
    - slightly twisted mail account viewer
... and that is it, if you are not counting the slowest iPhone 3G ever:-)

So I downgraded my iPhone 3G to 3.1.3 and now it is fast again. It took a couple of hours to surf the Internet to find the right guide, but I did it. For folks who are on the way to get it done, I have put together a simple procedure, so e-mail me to vkutcherenko@gmail.com and I will send it to you.
