I had the problem, but the "reset all" trick worked for me. I have a Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow, and I'll keep it to make sure Apple gets the word that many people are having this problem. Just to recap, these are the things that have been reported to help in various similar threads:

    1. Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All

    2. Hard Reset -Simultaneously press and hold the home button at the bottom of the phone and the sleep/power button at the top of the phone. Keep holding until the phone restarts.

    3. Press the sleep button at the beginning of a call.

Here's hoping the rumored update will address the problem!

I am having the same issues - very often!

Almost on every call I either hang up on the person, the mute button is pressed, the phone tries to call facetime, or the call simply ends.

If none of those things happen, I loose all my service.

I have done the reset and it did not work. I really hope this is an issue fixed in an update. There isn't an issue with me holding the phone wrong - I have had every iphone since the first one, and there is something different about this phone. It simply doesn't not function as well for phone calls.

    Hope this gets fixed.

I have this problem also. When calling my cheek ends up pressing the mute button, hanging up calls, or pressing something else. I have never had a problem with the way I use an iPhone before, but this new iPhone is useful for making calls.

check this video it shows just how bad it is

i hope its a software problem and not a cheap or badly placed sensor or this is going to be bigger than the call frop reception problems

i dont think apple want you to use your phone as a phone at the moment there is just to many errors here i thought they tested thes out on the field.

the people who tested these at apple need to be sacked twice over

I have two iPhone 4 units. Both operate properly in all aspects. I did some testing and both phones turn the keypad back on when they reach about 1.25 inches from my ear. I couldn't move them back fast enough to get a bad keypress. I installed both as new phones and re-installed all apps/music/videos etc. It took all afternoon to get both the way I wanted them but after hearing so many reports of problems involving those who restored from a backup I am glad I took the time to do it the 'hard' way.

I'm having this issue as well. Just going to try the various levels of reset and see if that works.

If your phone is in a case that partially covers the screen above the receiver slot, take the case off and try the phone again. I have a Belkin leather case with a strip across the top of my screen and that strip seems to be causing similar problems to those expressed above. I take the case off and the problems seem to go away. More testing will prove me right or wrong.

This thread has obviously become quite large and difficult too read thru if you're just now looking at it for the first time. In summary, some people have seen an improvement after doing a reset on the settings and/or reset on the network settings. I personally did not. I even went so far as to restore the iPhone as a new device (painful) without any luck. Cases on the device can be an issue but I'm not using one and I think most people aren't that are experiencing this issue. I did call Apple and they are willing to swap the iPhone out with another one, however, all the usual caveats on the exchange apply. Someone posted earlier in this thread they went ahead and did the exchange but still have the issue with the new device. Merid posted a video that demonstrates the issue very well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqdhdnXx7dk
The bottom line is there doesn't appear to be a universal fix for all of us that can be done at the user level. If you are reading this thread and experiencing this issue you should PICK UP THE PHONE AND CALL APPLE NOW to open a case number on this. Only after the problem has been widely reported to them, not fellow users experiencing the same problem, will they try to implement a fix.

I've noticed the same issue on the iphone 4. Every time I'm on call I end going to mute or ending the call with me chick. So annoying!

Just did the reset all settings after muting or hanging up on the same person 5 times. After shutting down and restarting, I made another call and held the phone between my cheek and shoulder and moved my head a lot during the call. The issue did not repeat itself, so I am guessing I am one of the people that it worked for. Being a busy person who often holds my iPhone between cheek and shoulder (yes, I know I can use a headset), so this would have been a real bit*h to deal with. I'm hoping that's the end of it.
BTW... we have 5 new iPhones in the family and it didn't matter if you used a previous backup when synching for the first time. We all had the same proximity sensor issue. Not everyone has reset all settings yet, so we'll see it corrects all 5 phones. So far 2 of the 5 have reset and found it helped correct the issue.
