This 'simple post' from iamweezy is PURE POETRY. It can all be boiled down to that statement, iamweezy.

"Apple, just give me an iPhone 4 that works please!" Enough said.

Or get an iPhone 4 like mine with no problems unless I cover 50% or more of the outer band which degrades the signal, but does not drop the call.

Okay, in all seriousness, I too have the disappearing bars, however, I still have yet to lose a call, or have an SMS fail. Maybe it's a software issue. What is kinda annoying is the proximity sensor issue. I'm sure Apple will fix it.

Jason, I would like to side with you here. But one of the big HEADLINES in all of this is that Apple is claiming it is a non-issue.

What we really need in this forum is solutions. I think those solutions must come from Apple.

I have found that a case does diminish the problem, but data speeds still slow down.

Not only does the death grip affect the signal but I just layed down my new 4 next to my old 3g model and there were less bars. I hope this only involves a software fix. Other than that it is great.

Yes, I would never use a cellphone for anything mission critical. Always a landline.

Making a phone call is "mission critical" for an iPhone.

I have an appointment tomorrow with the Apple Store where I purchased the IP4. I will must likely return the IP4 given the issues that I have with voice quality. I have tested calls to my home line voice mail because of reported call quality issues. What I have found is that calls placed via speaker phone or using headset are "ok" (not excellent) but calls placed and speaking directly into the IP4 are "poor" (muffled and chopped). This is outbound speech issue.... I can hear the called party fine. I did not have this issue with the IP3G. I called apple support via 611 and while the Apple support tech was friendly, he gave me a response that the phone was working as designed, the network reception and phone may work better if I had a Bumper..........He really provided NO help and was totally following a line of BS from the stand point that there is not an issue with the phone...... it is what it is!!!!

I am sadden given I have been an Apple fan since 1984 (Apple II days) and have owned many of their products..... The iPhone 4 is a great smart device however, phone features with respect to Voice quality and reception are lacking and this will impact future sales in a big way!

It's the antenna! Read this link to a recent Gizmodo article; it is excellent: http://tinyurl.com/2acctet This wireless expert showed data transmission speeds for the iPhone 4 under various scenarios: flat on table, held with hand covered, and held with bare hands. Flat on table was best; covered hand was next but with serious signal deterioration; bare hands at or near zero. He was also able to demonstrate that in very strong 3G signal areas, the difference were less pronounced but still significant. In weaker areas, the differences are dramatic. He argues that everyone is eventually going to have a problem unless they restrict themselves to high signal areas at all times. He feels that the antenna needs to be coated with something to fix this problem, which to me argues strongly for a recall.

You nailed it. Me too. LONG TIME FANBOY here. But this is absolutely stunning. I might suggest you try a bumper. Although it doesn't eliminate the issue for me, it does help. Still if I place my hand (even with bumper on) over the trouble area at the lower left I find a diminishment of the signal in short order, just not as bad.

You know I think it's funny that Steve Jobs at the apple iPhone 4 unveiling he poke fun at the droid and it's battery life. At least they can make a call. Now moto. Droid X is poking fun at him and the iPhone 4 " quote you can hold are phone anyway you like we have two antennas" that's funny. I have defended the iPhone for years because of it's good quality. I'm sorry I'm very disappointed with my iPhone 4 reception and the fact that apple is just turning their backs on the people how had their so long. Apple just recall the phones and fix this issue... My droid buddies have been giving me all kind of crap over this deal.

Same with me. I've been preaching Apple since the 80s. I've had a Mac SE, and LC II, the Quadra, the first iMac, numerous iMacs since... and the FIRST WEEK release of the iPod in 2001. I've owned the original iPhone, the 3G and now this defect which is being denied.

I have found that the bumper does help slightly, but it is NOT A FIX.

I assume your mistrust in wireless technologies stem from the fact that you didn't grow up with them?

I am going to take Steve's advice. I am not going to hold IPhone the way i have grown accustomed to holding a phone. in fact I am not going to hold an IPhone at all because I am not going to buy one.
I was seriously considering one and actually looking forward to it. But I need a phone to first and foremost be a working and reliable PHONE.

The worst part of this is Apple's non responsiveness. Penny wise...Pound foolish.
