3G data speed on iPhone 4 is painfully slow

Is anyone who doesn't have the grandfathered "unlimited" data plan having these issues? I have the unlimited plan, so who knows if it is deliberate sabotage...

Also, I am crestfallen with Apple's statement about how we might be in areas with low reception without knowing it, which causes the bar drop. I get the bar drop due to death grip super easy at my work, where I've never had reception issues before. My work cell (nokia e71x) doesn't report low reception, and it's a 3G phone.

I am keeping my eye on July 13th - that's my last day to return the phone. Here's to hoping they figure this out before then...

So I continue to have these issues. I've been on the phone with Apple tech support (which I have to say have been extremely friendly and professional and there hasn't been much of a wait to get through to them) and done the standard troubleshooting (restoring phone and setting up as new). I called AT&T tech support and the tech there after doing something to my network settings remotely, alluded to the fact that the latest iPhone software was "giving them troubles" and that there were "outages" in my area that are likely affecting my 3G service. I'm guessing that there are larger issues at work here that they aren't talking about but if they were affecting a majority of iPhone 4s there would be much more publicity behind it.

I've switched off 3G and am using Edge and Wifi at the moment. I don't know if its worth my time and effort to make an appointment at the Apple Store or wait for a fix.

Going to the store was a waste of time for me. I'm on my third iPhone 4 and the issues remain and I now have a ticket open with Apple. AT&T continues to insist its not their network as well

I am terribly frustrated and have had to go to Edge, and don't understand why this isn't getting any publicity. Crazy.

I agree totally. I might as well have kept my "old school" original iPhone running Edge, given the miserably slow 3G performance I am getting now. With 18 pages (so far) of complaints, how can this not be more publicized?

I doubt going to Edge will do much good. I have the exact same problem listed in here on Edge...and I get it on 3G when I go into the city. My wife's iPhone 3G on iOS 3.1.3 has had no issues whatsoever. At times, I have had to borrow hers to check my work email.

I am just glad to see it is not just me. Since, every time I get the issue, I have full bars, I would assume it is a software issue and that it can be fixed. Now, if Apple could only admit when they have an issue and let customers know that a fix is on they way. But, uncomfortably, in true Apple fashion, they can never admit any wrong.

    Frustrating.

10 am and 3G speeds back to disgustingly slow. False hope from this mornings spike. AT&T has been following up since my phone support session tonight they will advise if they will be giving me a credit due to the crippled 3G data.

Bump. Identical symptoms to others in this thread:

    1. In areas with a very good 3G signal my iPhone will simply stop transferring data. Full bars, 3G icon, but nothing goes. Switching manually to Edge resolves the issue. (I am in an office with 3G repeaters so I know signal strength is not the issue.)

    2. My colleagues in the office can use their previous model iPhones (3G, 3GS) without an interruption of 3G service.

    3. The issue is sporadic - occasionally it seems like things are okay again, but then the phone comes to a screeching halt.

    4. I have had no problems with 3G in my home - only in my office (and parts and places nearby). The issue seems to have to do with location.

I'm hoping the upcoming iOS update will have a little more going on behind the scenes than simply adjusting the display of signal bars. This is a real problem and I don't relish the idea of wasting hours restoring my phone, losing my settings, driving to the Apple Store...even if you do get a proper phone eventually, you never get that time back. Irks me.

Another (central) Maryland user here. I've been experiencing these same very slow 3G data rates and it's driving me insane. I can't do anything on my iPhone 4.

Still no resolution here in the Salt Lake City area... I just read the press release and hands down, adjusting the formula will not fix this issue unless there is another fix in the update that will adress it.

My thinking is that this problem is isolated to certain service areas and Apple doesn't want to open a can of worms and mention it in a PR if not all people are experiencing the issue.

This morning i had consistent data connectivity for 1 hour and i started to love this phone because of it... after one hour in the same spot? Server time-outs, 10 minutes page loads, and no data. Will someone from Apple at least acknowledge this problem? Or better yet, have the tech blogs gripe about it to get it done? The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Just to add another mark to the tally.

Having the same problem. Driving me nuts. My iPhone 4 timeouts 90% of the time while my girlfriends 3Gs is screaming fast.

I was also grandfathered in with the unlimited data plan.

Keep us posted. My guess is that it will stop working again.
