My wife had her iPhone 4 slip out of a pocket this evening and land screen first in the street. The screen pretty much shattered although the phone is still in perfect working order. Any idea how much it costs to get a new one put on by Apple? If we repair though them would it affect the warranty? Fortunately we kept our old 3GS phones so she can use it while being repaired.

In the past Apple charged a flat rate of $199. Likely they replace it and use (repaired) to replace another broken phone. So turnaround might be very fast.

I don't know how the warranty is affected: But I suspect that a repair anywhere else would void the warranty.

Others will chime in who've been down this path; I (knock on wood) have not.

Same thing happened to me. I took it to the Genius Bar and they replaced it for free. They didn't have the replacement in stock; said it would be next week sometime. I was relieved, and bought a bumper. It comes highly recommended from a heretofore case-hater.

Wow, I wonder why they replaced it free of charge. That is unusual for user caused damage. I think the bumper looks great on the phone. I do miss seeing the stainless steel rim though.

Same thing happened to me, only with the back side....and I had a bumper on it. Phone landed flat on its back and the back shattered. Apple replaced for free. I have taken off the bumper and gone to a full case. Obviously, the bumper is not enough protection for some accidental drops. At the time, I did a little research and iResQ.com does repairs on iPhones.

Makes sense. My iPh4 arrived on June 23 and I had it in a case the next day (a quickie order from Amazon). I'll upgrade to a nicer case when there is more of a selection, but I believe some sort of case covering all but the screen is essential from a protection standpoint.

Nice of Apple to do those free replacements reported up-thread, but I'd not count on it being a permanent thing.

You should sell your bumper on bay then. They are currently out of stock. Might get all your money back and then some.

Call your credit card company and see if they cover accidental damage. Many credit cards offer accidental damage coverage for the first 90 days.

    Tamara,

I don't suppose that applies to Mastercard Debit Cards, does it?

Probably not. I always make electronics purchases with my Amex card. That way I'm covered for accidental damage and I also get a one year extension of the manufacturer warranty.

Same thing happened to me last night. I stood in disbelief for a good 20 minutes until one of my friends told me it was okay and to breathe.

I'm going to try the Apple store tomorrow and convince them to give me a replacement. I spent 40 on the bumper which shipped in 7 days with a two day shipping option. Unfortunately, yesterday was the day my bumper should've arrived and of course this happens. ugh...

You guys should try getting Squaretrade as insurance. Costs about $100 for 2 years worth of coverage with a $50 deductible.

I took the bumper to my local Apple store (I purchased it online from the Apple store) to hopefully return it. They took it back for in-store credit. I graciously accepted and proceeded to purchase a case for my iPad. After the iPhone mishap, don't want to take any further chances with my iPad.

Just out of curiosity, will they make me pay for repairs? I know the whole policy is user abuse is out, but I really think they can make an exception. Seriously, I've only had the friggin thing for two weeks.

Doesn't matter if you've had the phone for 2 seconds, 2 weeks, 2 years, or 2 centuries. It's accidental damage and that's not covered by any warranty.

Apple isn't going to pay because you were careless and dropped your phone.
