I have noticed that mine restarts when after signal quality gets down to zero bars and then the "No Service" indicator pops up. Usually sometime after having "No Service" displayed it will crash. Yesterday, I was able to listen to music fine all the way to San Diego from Orange County without a crash and the signal was solid the whole drive. On the way back I started to lose signal and eventually it went to "No Signal" and next thing I know the music stops and the apple logo is on my iPhone. I've been dealing with this for a little over a week now and in my case the pattern is the same. When my iPhone losses signal quality and then tries to reaquire the signal it crashes. I am going to try to catch it using the configuration utility.
We are people, and not just another number! - SO APPLE DO NOT IGNORE US!
This is all very strange.
I have updated to iOS4 and my phone has rebooted 4 times in the same day (mid-conversation)
I even restored a backup, but this has made NO DIFFERENCE.
No problems at all with previous software.
I like some of the features of iOS4, but its obvious that there are still bugs in it!
How long are we to wait and put up with this?
I'll be notifying O2 about this, but it should be APPLE that need to sort it out.
Has anyone been to the APPLE store, and what have they advised?
Sorry if it's been answered.
Well, I just got back from the Apple store at South Coast Plaza. I made the appointment online at 3:30 pm and showed up at 4:50 pm. I told the apple genius my problem and that they just replaced my iPhone 3GS last week because of OS 4.0 related issues. I asked him if he could just restore the iPhone 3GS to 3.1.3 and he said no. Then I asked him if he wanted to see the iPhone Configuration Logs I saved and he said no. Then he gave me a new iPhone running 3.1.3. I'm not sure why they call them "geniuses" because I'm no genius and I would just done the same thing if I were in his shoes. Anyway, he did supply me with a new iPhone 3GS running 3.1.3. So far I have noticed better reception in my apartment on this new iPhone 3GS running 3.1.3 than I did with the iPhone 3GS I just returned running OS 4.0. There's no way in **** I'm going to update to OS 4.0 anytime soon.
I totally agree with you.
That's a nigthmare since i use ios4, thanks Apple for ruinning my iPhone !!
After installing OS4, iPhone reboots in a phone call after about 5 to 10 minutes.
It is definitely a problem with OS4 running on the 3GS.
We want to be able to use our phones (iphone 3gs) as a telephone!
When my iPhone losses signal quality and then tries to reaquire the signal it crashes....
I even restored a backup, but this has made nothing difference.....

Please Apple, give us a downgrade possibility!!!!!!!!!!!
I took mine in on the Wednesday following the release on Monday(?) so I'm not sure they'd even come across it then, they had to get me a replacement in, that came on the Thursday. No mention was made of not upgrading to iOS4, but after having for a week, and reading about batteries I thought I might well be safe to upgrade with the new phone. I also figured I would be able to put it back to 3 if I wanted.
I did make an appointment before going in to the store and there was no problem with them changing it.
Batteries are the same just brand new.

Glad to see I'm not alone in this but disappointed to see that others are sharing my pain.
Equally disapponted that with so many users posting, Apple have not released a patch to solve these issues.
My (reasonably new) 3GS now turns itself off at random, going to a re-boot screen after a couple of minutes. Also the pages are slow to move and the passcode screen sometimes freezes, preventing access to the phone.
Shame, i have a good phone before which i loved - now i have white elephant thanks to IOS4 - Apple have some explaining and fixing to do methinks!!
Good luck to us all, hopefully OS 4.1 will fix everything!
Just adding my name to the list of people who 'upgraded' his 3GS to IOS4, only to find that the advanced feature of 'making a phone call' is now limited to 5-10 minute bursts.
I've been onto 02 about it and, despite ordering it online, they reckon it's now up to me to take it into one of their stores to get it sorted.
I've only had the phone since March and it's not been played about with in any way.
