When I sync my Calendar app on my iPhone 4 with my iCal on my MacBook (via iTunes), instead of combining the two calendars, the sync REPLACES all the events I created on my phone with the (nearly blank) calendar on my Mac. The end result is all the events I entered into my phone are erased. It was my understanding that a sync process should combine the two (thus effectively backing up the events created on my phone on my MacBook). I've lost tons of work along the way.

I have the newest software on my phone, but I did restore the settings from my old iPod touch. Could that be the problem?

MacBook software: Mac OS X 10.5.8
