At the AT&T store I asked an AT&T sales rep about the proximity sensor issue and he said you can get this problem if you use a case designed for an older model. Unless you are using the Apple-designed bumper please remove the case and see if you still have the problem.

I don't use a case or anything and i still have a problem with the proximity sensor and so do others so AT&T is just ignoring the problem just like APPLE So Apple when are you really going to address this problem ?

This is a huge issue. Almost every call I make ends up being put on mute, going to the keypad and numbers get pushed, etc. This is very frustrating and needs to be addressed. It's a great idevice, but an awful phone. I have to tell my friends not rush out and upgrade, it's just not ready for prime time yet.

I took my phone to the Apple store for repair/exchange this evening. The Genius first said that he had not heard of the issue (yeah, right! total lie). I told him there are nearly 70 pages on the Apple Support forum for this exact issue. He immediately dismissed my comment and said, "We typically don't lend too much credence to support forum posts..." Ok....

Anyhow, the Genius made a call on my phone and, of course, he did not encounter any of the proximity issues I'm having. He gave the phone back to me and said, "There doesn't appear to be any issues with your phone. You'll just have to get used to the new Proximity Sensor location on the iPhone 4..." I was like, "Ummm... Huh?" He refused to exchange the phone.

Luckily, I bought my phone from Best Buy on launch day. I immediately went back to Best Buy and the Mobile Phone sales guy said they've already had 9 of their 30 launch day iPhones returned due to antenna and proximity sensor issues. He put me on a list to exchange the phone. Luckily, I have 45 days to exchange the phone, since I'm a Best Buy silver rewards card holder...

Anyhow, I'm kinda bummed the Genius refused to help me . He was rather arrogant, too, which really made me mad. Oh well... Back to Best Buy it goes...

I had the exact same experience at the apple store with there so called "Genius"
What a joke is all I can say. He did the test call and of course it worked for him..
Except he did agree to exchange my phone which he did and guess what.
I still have the exact same problem with the exchange.
I purchased my phone to from best buy but I only have 30 days to make a move and they warned me about a 15% restocking fee yea right no way.

    Steve

my experiance is the same, first he told me there is nothing wrong but he will exchange it if i want to (and thats after me being rude to them in front of the costumers), i think they have all been told what to tell us when we come in to the store. So far out of 30-40 calls i only had it once turn on the speaker while i was moving the phone around on my ear. I will see how it goes for the couple of days, and if the problems start to come back i will probably retur it for refund.

Well, I tried to "RESET ALL SETTINGS" to see if it fixed my proximity sensor.

This has ended up resulting in a new bug- the PASSCODE LOCK is messed up. Previously, I was able to pick a time before the passcode was required (ie 15 mins). Now all the choices are gone except IMMEDIATELY or OFF.

Anyone else see this? Beware if you reset all settings folks. Makes me wonder what else is screwed up now that I have reset all settings.

I think this may have been an issue for me today. I attempted to make a call and I could not get it to dial despite having 1-2 bars. Saturday evening my phone showed no service in my house but didn't really think about it until Sunday morning when I turned my phone on in my house and it still gave me the "no service " notification in the upper left hand corner, so I went outside to the end of my driveway only to have that same notification. I turned it off completely and turned it back on and worked fine and showed 5 bars. I had to turn it off today and restart it, but wonder if it is the proximity issue causing this problem? I am coming from Sprint and all these little quirks are making me question whether to go back.

Is anybody from Apple going to say anything official about this problem? Even if they say "that is how the phone functions and if you are not satisfied with how it works, you can return it."

I wonder what the official position is going to be? I think everybody here is hoping for a software fix, but we don't even really know if one is coming for this. I think this problem is much bigger than what it seems to be.

Apple, what happened? You would never release a product in this fashion before now. Even if you told us a few people are experiencing this issue and it is a very small percentage of iPhone 4 owners.

This is what makes me think that it must be much bigger of a problem since nobody is acknowledging it.

I am having the same issue, I am constantly hanging up on calls when the phone touches my face. The Proximity sensor does not seem to be working all the time or correctly. I seriously hope this is a software issue and not a hardware issue. Has anyone received a response from Apple on this issue??
