Just to say, I've now sorted this out by deleting my MobileMe account from the iPhone, then re-inputting it.

I have also seen a suggestion on MacRumors of deleting and re-installing iTunes, so if what worked for me doesn't work for you, try giving that a go.

Same problem here - since installing i0S4 on two iphone 3G's cannot connect to app store or itunes store from the phone. Have reinstalled, reinititalised, reconfigured passwords, but no go...
    It's a bug in ios4 allright.

I finally fixed it on my 3GS, and it seems to be an issue with the iBooks app, at least in my case. Here's the steps I took:
    1. Uninstall iBooks and accept the data removal prompt.
    2. Plug iPhone into PC and then reinstall iBooks again via iTunes on your PC. Obviously, sync your phone.
    3. Go into iBooks and you should now be able to access the book store. Look for the sign out option and touch it. Ignore all prompts by iBooks to sign back in, just keep tapping cancel and then close the app.
    4. Open up the App Store app and you should now be able to do so without any errors. You should also be able to sign into your iTunes account from within the App Store without error as well.

For now, I'm going to stay away from the iBooks app

Had the problem for a couple weeks. Fixed it by doing the following:

    - Go into iTunes
    - Sync any recently purchased songs, apps, etc.
    - Click on Restore
    - It may ask you if you want to back up first - Click yes!
    - Be sure to choose restore from back-up - Do not choose restore to new!
    - Select your most current back-up - Don't worry, the bug does not propagate into the back-up.
    - Leave your iPhone hooked up to iTunes until the restore is complete
    - The problem should be gone

Hey guys, here's what fixed it for me, after a week of searching. Quick and easy!
    1. go into settings / store (down the bottom).
    2. click on sign out.
    3. go back to the app store app and sign back in - it works!
    Enjoy.

That worked for me the first time it happened, but not the second time it happened

Yes, logging in and out doesn't work, neither does resetting your network settings or doing a hard reset. If you want to fix the problem permanently, follow my instructions above. I struggled with this for weeks, and the restore from back-up did the trick. If for some strange reason that doesn't work (though it did for me), then call and make an appt and take it to the Apple Store.

The below didn't work for me... only having problems connecting over 3g, no problems with wifi. My phone is now intermittently connecting with the store (doesn't connect way more often than it does). Phone is on the desk and I can see the ATT tower out of my office window.

I did a full restore and haven't had any problems connecting via 3G.

I'm having the same problem with the App Store. Very very annoying. I'm going to try doing a restore when I get home from work. I tried signing out and back in, but that didn't fix anything.

Apple needs to fix this bug.

If I restore my phone, will it go back to the 3OS and remove the ios4 that I just installed? I get the "cannot connect to the itunes store" everytime I try to download, or sometimes even look at apps.

If you restore, it will restore to the latest version of iOS software. In this case, 4.0.1.
iTunes does not allow you to install old versions of firmware...at least not easily.

This might help some ppl. I just bought my phone today and it wasn't on the network yet but it I had it on my wifi and I couldn't connect to the Store.

It turned out my iPhone picked up a 169.... IP address instead of a valid one ie 192.168...

Changed the setting to manual and it's working again.
