Currently Being ModeratedJul 7, 2010 5:12 PM (in response to danzigism)? I have a 8gb iTouch, and it says it a 3rd gen? im confused
Currently Being ModeratedJul 7, 2010 7:17 PM (in response to danzigism)The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

Currently Being ModeratedJul 7, 2010 8:10 PM (in response to Gerald Raddatz)Your link is one that I've read a bunch of times. You'll see that the only 3rd Generation iPod Touches that are listed on that page are the 32GB and the 64GB models. The model number you posted belongs to a 32GB model.
There simply *is not* a 3rd Generation iPod Touch that is an 8GB model. However all these companies are misleading people saying that they're selling a 3rd Gen 8GB model. That is the point I'm trying to make. Although it is of my understanding that there isn't a difference in hardware that I'm aware of besides the storage capacity.
Companies like MacMall.com are saying it's a 3rd Gen because they don't want people to think it's old and outdated compared to the 32GB and 64GB models. I think this is a real problem.Pentium Core 2 Duo
Currently Being ModeratedJul 7, 2010 8:21 PM (in response to danzigism)By the way, I was able to confirm that there is not an 8GB 3rd Gen model simply by calling 1-800-APL-CARE and asking a representative.
My problem is that Apple claims that the 3rd Gen is almost 50% faster than the previous models. This is why a 3rd Gen model sounded attractive to me. If companies like MacMall.com are CLAIMING to sell 3rd Generation 8GB iPod Touches but in actuality it is the 2nd gen with inferior hardware, then that really bugs me..

Currently Being ModeratedJul 7, 2010 9:19 PM (in response to danzigism)I stand corrected. After much search on various web sites:
The hardware in the 8GB iPod Touch 3rd generation is actually the same as the 8GB iPod Touch 2nd generation. The only difference between the 2nd and 3rd gen for the 8GB model is the 3rd gen comes with the iPhone OS3 software.
iPhone OS 4 will work with this device, but it won't have multitasking.Mac Mini 1.83 Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB SDRAM, Mac OS X (10.6.2), iBook G3, 3G iPod Touch 32 gig
