    Woke up to the same problem this morning on my Iphone after upgrading software to Iphone 4

    ....(No Sender) (No Subject) This message has no content Date: 12-31-69....

    The quick fix for me was just disabling Mail under Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Accounts (for me it was Mobile Me)> and then turning Off the Mail button. It cleared the bad messages after I left settings and then returned and re-enabled Mail.

    For me it was as easy as going to another app or the home screen, entering the multitasking menu (double click home button), then just close the Mail App. Hopefully Apple fixes this bug soon, but for now, just simply FULLY close the Mail App, then reopen it.

    I noticed this problem after updating my 3GS to 4.0 and it has cropped up on the 4 as well. Deleting the email account, disabling it, bringing up the All Mail folder, and rebooting the phone will clear out the current No Sender messages, but they inevitably come back.

    As others have noted, turning off Email Threading clears it up for good. Hopefully this bug gets fixed in an upcoming software release.

    You can fix the problem by turning off 'organize by thread' under your mail settings. Apple should still fix this problem though.

    Good news! I was still having the seven bugs listed below on my iPhone 3G S after doing the iOS reload and iPhone restore, but I had not deleted and re-added my MobileMe account yet. Since the MobileMe account appeared on my iPhone after the restore process, I did not think I had to. But someone at Apple iPhone Support told me that I still needed to do it in order to get rid of the bugs. So I did, and it worked! Ignore my previous list of steps and use the ones below, which have been reorganized, are more detailed, and now have the MobileMe delete/re-add steps included.

    The same steps also improved the sluggishness of iOS 4 on my wife's iPhone 3G, but unfortunately, not to the degree that it did on my iPhone 3G S. While the steps improved sluggishness a bit on the 3G, navigation is still slower than with the previous OS.

    Here are the bugs that appeared on my iPhone 3G S after updating to iOS 4. (I use MobileMe for Mail on my Mac and iPhone.)

    NOTE: My wife ran the iOS 4 update on her iPhone 3G and had none of the bugs I encountered on the 3G S, but her 3G did become extremely sluggish; much more so than my 3G S. For example, it would take her 3G fifteen seconds after tapping a text message before the message appeared on the screen.

    iPhone 3G S Bugs After iOS 4 Update:
    1) Mail messages marked as unread (blue dot) on the iPhone remained marked as unread (blue dot remained) after being read on either iPhone or Mac. (This problem was present only on the iPhone Mail; not Mac Mail or MobileMe Mail on the Mac.)

    2) Sometimes a red badge icon displayed a number of unread messages, but the badge and number remained, even after the messages had been read. (This problem was present only on the iPhone Mail; not Mac Mail or MobileMe Mail on the Mac.)

    3) Messages appeared with 'no sender' and 'no subject' and were dated 12/31/69. They could not be deleted manually, because when the 'Edit' button was tapped on the iPhone, no circle appeared next to the message to delete it. (This problem was present only on the iPhone Mail; not Mac Mail or MobileMe Mail on the Mac.)

    4) Some normal messages that could be read also could not be deleted manually, because when the 'Edit' button was tapped on the iPhone, no circle appeared next to the message to delete it. (This problem was present only on the iPhone Mail; not Mac Mail or MobileMe Mail on the Mac.)

    5) Sometimes when I moved an e-mail message on the iPhone to the 'Junk (.Mac)' folder, I got and error message that said, " Unable to move file to Junk (.Mac) folder." The file did not appear in the Junk folder of the iPhone, or the Junk folder of Mac Mail, or the Junk folder of Mobile Me Mail (on a Mac), and the file was then just gone. NOTE: Sometimes there was no error message, and this operation worked fine.

    6) Whenever I moved an e-mail message on the iPhone from the Trash folder to the Inbox folder, it acted as if the move was successful, but when I checked the iPhone Inbox, the message was not there. However, the message DID successfully appear in the Mac Mail Inbox and the MobileMe Mail Inbox (on a Mac).

    7) A few apps were zippier, but for the most part, navigation for most things on the iPhone were more sluggish since installing iOS 4.

    Apple iPhone Support told me that if problems were encountered after an iOS update on the iPhone, the following steps should be tried (with a Mac) to put a new copy of the iOS on the iPhone and then restore the user data:

    1) Connect the iPhone to the Mac and let it sync to iTunes; this will automatically backup the user data (if iTunes has been set up to do backups upon syncing).

    2) Select your iPhone in the 'DEVICES' column, then write down the settings you have under each tab; these will later need to be re-entered.

    3) IMPORTANT: Select 'iTunes' / 'Preferences' / 'Devices'. Check the box next to 'Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically'. (This will ensure that you do not overwrite your precious backup data before you restore it to your iPhone.)

    4) Disconnect the iPhone from the Mac.

    5) To be extra safe, let's copy the last backup to the desktop of your Mac: Go to the Finder / home folder / Library / Application Support / MobileSync / Backup.

    - On a laptop Mac: Hold [ctrl] + 2 fingers on the trackpad + click on the folder inside the 'Backup' folder, then select 'Copy' / Go to your desktop, Hold [ctrl] + click on the desktop and select 'Paste item'.

    - On a desktop Mac: Hold [ctrl] + right-click on the folder inside the 'Backup' folder, then select 'Copy' / Go to your desktop, right-click on the desktop and select 'Paste item'.

    6) If you use Time Machine on your Mac, turn it off.

    7) On the Mac, create a new "test" account by selecting System Preferences / Accounts / Unlock the security feature with password if needed / Click the <+> button. / Select 'Administrator' / Name the new account "test" and enter the required information / Click <Create Account>.

    8) Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen and log out of the current account.

    9) Log in as 'test' by selecting 'test' then clicking <Log In>.

    10) Open iTunes and follow the prompts. (<Agree> / <Next> / <Next> / <Next> / <Done>)

    11) Open iTunes. / Go to iTunes / Preferences / Check the box next to 'Prevent iPhones, iPods, and iPads from syncing automatically' / Click <OK>.

    12) Connect the iPhone to the Mac.

    13) Select the iPhone icon in the left column of iTunes under 'Devices'. / Click the <Restore> button. / Click the <Don't Backup> button. / Click another <Restore> button. / Click <Next> / Click <Agree>. (The restore process will now begin,and it takes a while. iTunes will load a new copy of the iOS as if your phone was new.)

    14) Once the restore process has completed, rename "test's iPhone" to your usual iPhone name (Example: Dave's iPhone).

    15) If using MobileMe, uncheck the box next to 'Automatically sync contacts, calendars, bookmarks, notes and email accounts'. (This will prevent doubled data being synced with MobileMe sync.)

    16) Leave the box next to 'Automatically sync applications' checked.

    17) Click the <Done> button.

    18) Once the screen in iTunes displays 'iPhone sync is complete', disconnect the iPhone.

    19) Log out, then log into your normal account.

    20) Open iTunes, then re-connect your iPhone to the Mac.

    21) Restoring:

    - On a laptop Mac: Hold [ctrl] + 2 fingers on the trackpad + click on the iPhone icon (listed under 'DEVICES' in the left column of iTunes). / Select 'Restore from Backup'. / Click <Restore>. (This will take a while.)

    - On a desktop Mac: Right-click on the iPhone icon (listed under 'DEVICES' in the left column of iTunes). / Select 'Restore from Backup'. / Click <Restore>. (This will take a while.)

    22) Wait for the iTunes screen to display 'iPhone sync is complete'.

    23) Click on 'iTunes' / 'Preferences' / 'Devices'. Uncheck the box next to 'Prevent iPhones, iPods, and iPads from syncing automatically' / Click <OK>.

    24) Select the iPhone icon in the left column under 'Devices', then click on each tab and enter the settings that you wrote down previously. / Click <Apply>.

    25) Once the screen in iTunes displays 'iPhone sync is complete', disconnect the iPhone.

    26) Delete then re-add your Mail account on the iPhone (MobileMe in this example): On the iPhone, go to Settings / Mail, Contacts, Calendars / MobileMe, then write down your settings.

    27) Tap the <Account Info> button and write down your settings for 'Name', 'Address', 'Password', and 'Description'.

    28) Write down your settings for 'Name', 'Address', 'Password', and 'Description'.

    29) Tap the <Cancel> button.

    30) Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap the <Delete Account> button. / Tap <Delete from my iPhone>.

    NOTE: Once finished, power the iPhone off, and then back on.

    31) Once again on the iPhone, go to Settings / Mail, Contacts, Calendars / Add Account / MobileMe, and enter the Account Info that you wrote down previously. / Tap <Next> / Enter the other MobileMe settings you wrote down / Tap <Save>.

    32) On the Mac, go back into System Preferences and delete the test account.

    33) If you use Time Machine on the Mac, turn it back on.

    34) Once you have verified that everything on your iPhone is correct, you can delete the copy of your backup file from the Desktop.

    After performing these steps on my iPhone 3G S, all the bugs disappeared!

    After performing these same steps on my wife's iPhone 3G, the sluggishness did improve a bit, but navigation is still slower than with the previous OS.

    The mail function prior to the iOS4 was superior to all else and that is why I chose the Iphone in the first place. The mail function in the iOS4 blows and is an epic fail. I am totally disappointed. I would thing there would be a firmware update already but clearly I have been overestimating Jobs and Co.

    Ugh - same here.

    "No sender, No topic" emails used to show up sporadically in my v.2 iPhone. I could delete them, and they appeared to come from a Yahoo list serve account.

    Just had my first one today on my iPhone 4. No visible sender, and that funky 1960's send date. Couldn't delete it, but when I plugged it into my Mac it disappeared. Now I'm thinking that plugging it in was a bad idea...hope I didn't just introduce some sort of junk into my desktop!

    Has Apple announced what they think this glitch is yet? I haven't found any resolutions or explanations yet.

    I had similar behavior, I did the steps below and it seems to have helped (for now)

    I deleted the account on the iPhone.

    I shutdown mail.app on my laptop.

    I went to the web page of my email acct and rebuilt the index for my inbox.

    I started mail.app on my laptop and selected the inbox and did a rebuild.

    I re-entered the acct info onto my iPhone.

    I turned off 'push' on my iPhone.

    Still a little weird with old messages on my inbox, but otherwise behaving better.

    Same here on my 3g3. I tried unthreading the msgs, which helped but only some -- I still get no sender no subject messages, and they're still undeletable. the only thing that gets rid of them is a phone sync with the computer. these ghost messages seem to be dupes of other messages already deleted.

    I have this problem as well on my iPhone 4. I think know what the cause is. I'm using an IMAP account. I can trigger the problem by:

    1. getting new mail on phone and laptop
    2. deleting messages from mail client on laptop
    3. then, on phone, messages that were deleted on laptop show up as no sender/no subject.

    I can make the no sender/no subject messages on the phone go away by
    4. viewing another mailbox (eg. mailboxes->drafts) and then
    5. viewing the inbox (mailboxes-> inbox)

    So, I think that the problem is that the iphone email client is slow to acknowledge messages that have been deleted off of the server by an email client on another computer (could be a laptop, or perhaps even the server refiling spam or junk mail automatically).

    Apple should fix the problem, but I think it is cosmetic. The iphone mail client is not refreshing its inbox view to reflect messages that have been remotely deleted.

    For me, turning off threading gets rid of the zombie messages (no sender, no subject, date in 1969) for a while, but then they come back. I can cause them to come back by fetching messages on my iphone and staying in Inbox view of mail app, (ii) deleting messages or moving messages from another computer (e.g. laptop), and then (iii) looking at inbox on Mail app.

    I think I have managed to solve the zombie message problem by:
    Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar -> fetch new data to PUSH *ON*.

    I had turned push OFF because the iPhone isn't supposed to support PUSH with my IMAP server.

    I just turned push to ON, then zombie messages are gone. I send and delete some messages using steps - (iii) above. That used to produce zombie messages on my iPhone. But now, with push ON, the zombie messages do not appear.

    I'm interested to see whether this works for anyone else...

    Not sure, but I have a feeling these empty messages are messages that have been marked for deletion on the IMAP server (e.g by Outlook running on my home PC) but not yet purged. iOS4 bug not handling them correctly.
